Parts Car

I'm wanting to do the 5spd swap sometime in the near future. To do it, i'm planning on getting a wrecked manual 5th gen and using it as a parts car to go off of. That being said, I have a couple questions.

About how much would you all say is a good price for a NON-RUNNING prelude?
(finding one with engine trouble is the ideal situation for me because all i need out of it is the tranny like i said)

Secondly, does anyone have a rough estimate on how much money I could make back from parting it out when I'm done taking what I need for the swap? I figure I could make a few hundred back selling miscellaneous interior parts, wheels, headlights and so on but maybe i'm way off.

Opinions and estimations are much appreciated

Re: Parts Car

Your best bet is to find a used transmission at a junkyard or try car-part.com
Pm prelude1897.

You do realize these cars are getting scarce, right?

Yes, I'm definitely well aware that these cars are tough to find these days which is why the junk yard route is not really an option for me. I've called and searched several around my area and there's none to be mentioned. I have, however, been looking through craigslist and there's a couple on there that could work for me. They each have their own issues but the transmissions in them is what I want.

Re: Parts Car

I bought a running 4th gen for the engine for a build I'm doing. The rest I've been selling.

It was an auto, I sold no transmission related parts.
I bought it for $350, title was $60ish, like $20 for gas, $55 for trailer etc, etc.
Since then I made my roundabout $500 back, plus $2500 profit selling the most random parts. My $350 parts car, paid for the majority of my maintenance, some jdm goodies, some random goodies, the h22 head for my engine build, and other than car, it has paid for bills, eating out, dog food, other random necessitys over the last year since I bought it in march.

I am still selling parts almost weekly, and there is still about 50% of the parts left in the car, or in boxes ready to sell.

It is a great investment, that's the point I'm trying to make lol, all depends on price, condition, and most importantly, motivation to sell.

Re: Parts Car

True Drew! Some people sell a rollover shell like $2500.00 and say "easy fix"

Sometimes you get a running prelude with a main relay issue for $300.00. Luck of the draw

why did you pay $60 for a title to a parts car? Did the person not give you a title when you bought it?

Re: Parts Car

He gave me the title but in nj we have to pay $60 just for the new piece of paper.....

I also didn't know my plans for the car then, and wasn't sure of whether I was going to keep it or part it out. So I switched the title into my name to be sure I didn't run into problems down the road if I wanted to keep it... Which I might build it for boost, leave it bare with the minimum I need to drive it and build it for drag racing

And yea it is luck of the draw, but believe me, this lude was no diamond.... People just bought the most random parts, and the parts I thought would sell still haven't lol.... It all depends on your motivation to make money. When I needed more money, I made more sales.... Now I make very little sales because I work full time again... I still have the same stuff, I just don't have the time to commit to selling parts as much.
