Timing belt broke while idling

The bleed test show at least 2 bent valves and possibly more. Just replaced battery and spark plugs. Worst case scenario is $2100 estimate. I have a 1,000 dollars left on my auto loan, is this worth the fix? Is it basically a redone motor since the cylinder head is removed and the valves replaced?

Re: Timing belt broke while idling

First off...

Welcome to Prelude Zone.

Next... welcome to timing belts.

Third... $2100 is not unheard of. Time they pull it, re-build it, shave to ensure proper seal at $80+ an hour plus hundreds in parts... Pretty steep imo. But... you should shop around. Check the internet for shops in your area. Focus on those who specialize or enjoy fixing Honda H motors.
And see if you can buy the parts yourself, have somebody rebuild the head, then you my friend in the meantime study up on cars in general, learn the good shops in your area and make friends with a mechanic who'll teach you how to work on your car.

Lastly... vtec, not vtech. They coulda used an H for head but for whatever reason Honda chose not to.

Oh and you'd be rebuilding the top half. The cylinder head. The other half, the 'bottom end'. The bottom and the top is a full rebuild.

Re: Timing belt broke while idling

It has to be done one way or another in order for the car to run proper again.

Re: Timing belt broke while idling

2100 for a shop to do the work sounds about right. Average timing belt jobs alone are roughly a grand from Honda.

If your valve stem seals are leaking - now's the time to get them replaced.

Also, unless your piston rings are replaced - then no, it's not considered a redone motor.

Water pump, timing belt, and tensioner all need to be replaced during a timing belt job. And any oil seals on the timing side of the motor.

Pulling the head means new head gasket, whichever damaged valves - replaced, and inspection for any damages to the top of the pistons. It's a good amount of work, Even I would be a little hesitant on doing the work myself.

Re: Timing belt broke while idling

The only shop I trust with my H motor is Teknotik.com. The owner, Eric, is a huge Honda H motor fan and has always owned a prelude. Whenever a H motor comes in, he treats it as his own.

I would trust nobody but teknotik to build my H.

Re: Timing belt broke while idling

for that price, may as well just buy another motor to drop in then sell off the old motor for parts

Re: Timing belt broke while idling

That price includes every valve being replaced intake and exhaust, I'm thinking the bill will be around 1,300-1,600

I agree.

However, another motor would still require a new timing belt/tensioner/water pump and any misc seals replaced.

Unless OP is able to do this work himself - it's going to be costly either way.

So you have a choice OP; buy another motor or have the shop do the work to the current.

Re: Timing belt broke while idling

Got the car back. 2001 dollars to repair. No valves replaced just refurbished. Now the EGR is needing to be replaced. I'm starting to think this company gave me a run around

Re: Timing belt broke while idling

EGR is a simple task you can do on your own.

Clean the ports - install new plugs - clean the EGR valve - see where it goes from there.

Throw EGR related codes. Not run as smoothly as it could.

Pretty much it.
