Re: Increasing power prelude 5th generation automatic

The stock automatic gearbox can't handle the horsepower the car came with, let alone adding more.

Re: Increasing power prelude 5th generation automatic

The automatic tranny in the 5th gen was not designed with a bunch more torque to be added. And like the rings used in some early frm blocks (B21 block), the ideas did not end up as reliable as intended. Sometimes engineers forget 2+2+2=6 when they designed for the answer to be 7.

So with that said, the automatic tends to fail due to some working parts issues with your 190-200 hp engine. If you go adding say 15-20 more it'll likely be the detriment of a working transmission all -the -more sooner.
Check the tranny failure thread for more on what goes wrong. Good info scattered throughout all 5 pages. Not to say yours is gonna fail next week. But it'll give you early symptoms and solutions, just in case.

Oh, and read Lazarky's build thread. His auto is still going strong.

Edit: thanks for the +rep.

Re: Increasing power prelude 5th generation automatic

also depends on your driving style. you plan on VTECing every day then yes theres going to be issues when revs get and stay that high. auto engine idles high especially on the freeway when your driving 75 on the reg... but thats neither here nor there, sorry texas thing... anyway i think intake header exhaust will be ok, your car will be able to handle it, but adding horsepower by turbo or rebuild will proabbaly require head/block work if done crroectly at that point is usless with auto tranny. but i have 210,xxx miles on my auto and im still going string!! (knocks on wood)
