issues with clutch and possibly transmission

Hello, i got a 98 honda prelude guys, about a few weeks ago, had trouble with the clutch. as i haven't been paid, i made sure to get around to this and not drive the car til i was paid.

Issue is when when driving the car, come to a stop, press in clutch. can't exactly describe what happens but feels like the clutch doesn't disengage briefly. meaning that the clutch will go into neutral, but gives slight jerking feeling. when you keep going, occasionally the clutch won't disengage from gear at all. pedals all the way down, but the clutch acts and feels like it's still in gear and that the clutch pedal is only half down. i've gotten out of gear by pressing on the accelerator a bit, but that'll give a noticable jerking to force the clutch back into neutral. then will be hard to be put back in gear. so for now, preludes grounded until i can get some help.

after replacing the slave and master cylinder, feel like theres something more going on. any help would be useful.

bleed the system very throughly. I had the ssame issues then replced but didn't get all the air out and it got worse. it took me and a friend a while to get it all out. if your bleeder screw gets loose it will cause crazy issues.

Re: issues with clutch and possibly transmission

Sounds like its low on tranny fluid

Get under the car an fill it untill it pours out some

Bleeding the clutch wouldn't hurt as well both simple fixes

Re: issues with clutch and possibly transmission

I kinda had the same problem like urs, turns out I blew both slave and master cylinder, I would push the clutch in and it would buck like the clutch wasn't being engaged all the way when the car was in gear and trying to take it out of gear with the clutch in you couldn't take it out of gear without some force. Omg wat a pain in the ass was it to bleed the clutch, I had a small case of as some ppl call it clutch chatter when letting out ist gear the car would shake a bit but every other gear was fine including reverse. I looked online and it says my flywheel might have hot spots and I've been driving it for the past 3 months and it's getting better, knock on wood lol. I check forums and some people say the clutch disk would actually smooth the flywheel and it's been working thank god. Maybe the pressure plate or flywheel might have hot spots, that would cause the car to shake a bit. Also u can have a defective slave or master, my clutch master cylinder was defective and it wouldn't build pressure for nothing. Try this push the clutch in and have a buddy check if the slave is pushing down the fork to engage the clutch all the way, if it not u still have air in the lines. With what Abel said too check ur fluid, that's pretty easy to do. Good luck

Re: issues with clutch and possibly transmission

thanks a lot guys, good advice so far. definately going to check the trans fluid.

Today, bleed it a lot and got the slave to push the clutch in 2-3 inchs in, for the first few mins, car acts fine no problem on the raod. However, minutes later, issue flairs up again.

Re: issues with clutch and possibly transmission

UPDATE: continual bleeding didn't help, and after consorting with other local mechanics, we've decided to change out the clutch. i've also since it'll be easier to reach with it raised up, to check the transmission fluid, and change it, problem is, don't know what to get. and the the guys at o'reilys advice is 10w-40 motor oil which is iffy advice. so what would a 98 honda prelude sh manual trans need, as far as a transmission fluid goes.

Re: issues with clutch and possibly transmission

Final Update

Car's repaired and working just like new.

I Opted to take the clutch out and see the condition of the internal components. The clutch disc was the culprit, it was in in meh condition but the real thing was that one of the 4 springs that come on it had came out. it was grinded down a bit as well. the throwout bearing was okay as was the pressure plate.

so the clutch master and slaves i replaced were still good. good to know now i suppose lol. such a weird thing to happen. hope this helps anyone out there.
