Glove box lock issue...

My '99 came with only one key. It opens and locks everything it should except the glovebox. Im assuming at one point the glovebox was swapped out. Is there anyway I can get that key, change the lock to match my key, or am I just not gonna be able to lock the glovebox?

Re: Glove box lock issue...

You can have a locksmith re-work the tumblers.

Or you can find a car in the junkyard that has a key in the ignition and use that glove box lock... you'll have a second key to keep up with tho.

Re: Glove box lock issue...

If it won't unlock the gas/trunk release or the glovebox - then you have a valet key.

Valet keys will open doors and start the car but not open those things.

You either have a valet key or the glovebox was at one point swapped. Is the key a Honda key? If so, what color is it? Usually they're grey or something other than black.

Does it unlock the gas/trunk lock and open the trunk?

Re: Glove box lock issue...

Im gonna check it out and post if it locks the gas lever. Its a solid black key. Its the only key I got with the car.

Ok the key does not lock the gas lever. So I assume I have some form of valet copy. Any suggestions or am I dealer bound?

Re: Glove box lock issue...

Yeah, sounds like you've unfortunately got a valet key.

A dealership or locksmith can make you a new key.

I recommend a locksmith, they will need a key cylinder to take apart and make a new key - so you could probably just hand them the one from the glovebox so you aren't waiting for your car or anything. Now by doing it this way - you will only have a plain key that can unlock/lock the glovebox and gas latch. As long as you're fine with that, it's the cheaper and more reasonable option vs dealing with Honda's bs about making keys. Although I've heard rumors that some dealerships can pull up your key information and somehow make you one... I have no idea how much truth there is to that (sounds a little odd).

If you at some point want a master key that will start the car etc. made, well that'll cost bit more time and money to have done.

Finally got an answer from the dealer. A master key for my car is $65. All they need is the valet and my vin#.

Nice, good deal man.

Sounds like you've got a reliable honda dealer out your way.

Re: Glove box lock issue...

FYI everyone Lowe's makes transponder keys now, got one for myself $30 cut and programmed.
You could get the key and have it programmed at Lowe's (take valet so they can copy the code) and then take it to the dealership for them to cut according to your VIN. Might be a bit cheaper.

Lowes..walmart...depo.. nothing new.

I've read about people having issues with their keys failing.

Ever had a key just go dead? It sucks... Honda or reputable locksmith only..
