Snow & Salt

Hey guys, I decided to drive my Prelude through the winter this year (I live in the Chicago area). This is the second winter I've had it but the first time I drove my other car, a 96 Accord.

I decided to sell my Accord. Even though it's in great condition (only 81k) it needs brakes and long story short, the 96-97 Accord for some reason they designed it so that it takes a lot of labor to do a brake job on this model year. Honda quoted new brakes at around $900, and Acura where I used to work at over $1500....so obviously the car isn't worth it.

Sorry for the long post, but my real question is how can I minimize the crap loads of salt that I'm driving through? I mean, if I get my car washed that just removes the salt on the exterior. But what about the wheel wells and everything under the car? It's in great condition as is and I just bought a set of SH wheels in mint condition. They haven't been through heavy salt as they came from Georgia.

Any ideas? I wanna keep my baby in prime condition!

Re: Snow & Salt

Ppl say rust proofing + coin washes do wonders. But I dunno how they deal with everything freezing up.

Buy another car such as a ford escort or a ranger as a winter beater, those cars/ trucks are cheap as hell and relaible and easy to work on. You cant beat the salt.. especially in a 90's Honda

Living in Northeast ohio almost every car on the road that has been through one winter has rust on it. German cars seem to hold up them best from my observation. Japanese and American car will rot out when winter driven.

For 900 bucks I would of bought my self some tools(assuming you dont have any) and the brakes and did it myself. lol

If you must drive the lude, then bathe her every time after driving her, and I would undercoat the entire under body. If you have a powerwasher spray the wheel wells and underbody after each drive. underneath the fenders(the sub frame part) and the quarter panels like to rust.

Re: Snow & Salt

I dont know how much salt they use there but here its massive amounts. The only way to truely keep your lude in Prime condition is to not drive it during the winter.

Re: Snow & Salt

Carpool.

There are rubber strips at the rear of the rear wheels that trap the crud. Pull them off asap. Caused my va car to rust in the summer...
Other than that, a good undercoat and a touchless car wash with undercarriage spray.
You should have a good undercoat regardless, winter driving or not.

The 5th has a lot of galvanized seems, so no rust like 3rds n fourths get as long as you keep away the build up.

I agree with 1606 if you have the $ to buy another vehicle. An old pos hyundai is cheap cheap cheap and they held up pretty well, or a saturn.
I'm kinda partial to the ranger and hate seeing them get abused.

Re: Snow & Salt

$900 brakejob

Does that include a "girlfriend experience?"

What exactly is wrong with the brakes? (If you still have the accord)

Re: Snow & Salt

$900 on a brake job LOL

should of learned how to do brakes from a Youtube video before selling the Accord only 89k ?!?!

I owned two 96 97 Accords and did brake jobs on them myself a couple times for less than $400 COMPLETE new calipers, rotors, pads fluid...

Prelude is pretty much the same thing as the Accord so I would start learning how to do brakes before you sell that car after driving it to a stealership and getting quotes like that.

I would NOT drive the Lude in the snow...I did for a few years and now I am paying for it because my Rocker's are rusted out ...it cannot be stopped I washed my car everyday
