What to do first, looking for some opinions

So i am buying a 97 base 5 speed prelude,260k one previous owner she bought it new and she has legitimately done every maintenance item i have ever recommended(im a tech at a honda dealer) so the vehicle is in very very good condition not to mention she has never abused this car(she treats it like her child)it does burn about 1 quart of oil every 1500 miles. My question is besides the average bolt-ons intake, header, exhaust what would be your first move in terms of building a decent all motor weekend warrior.i plan on doing a nice rebuild on the bottom end with new bearings, pistons and rings, and with the head valves, springs retainers and maybe some stage 1 cams.im basicly look for some opinions on what are some decent brands of parts you would use(from experience)and what you may have done that turned out a good build.i have done the research on multiple forums on this stuff just looking for other opinions on what you guys think.im not on a small budget but keeping it at a reasonable price for a quick little ride.

some parts i was thinking of :

brian crower stage 1 cams
type s pistons and rings
valvetrain-undecided
dc header-came across a bisimoto at a great price just waiting to seal the deal
exhaust-undecided looking for the deepest one i can find
act streetlite flywheel and has a brand new oem clutch in it 2k ago...upgrade or not?
not sure about tuning either

any suggestions on parts or to help me along with a good build would be appreciated.

Re: What to do first, looking for some opinions

DC, Megan, Bisi - if you want power, don't wast your time with any of them.

Exhaust - if you want power, go custom. 2.5" for decent sound control with a little bump for an N/A car. 3" if you have bigger plans, don't mind the extra noise, and want a bit more of a bump in power.

Stock clutch is fine until you're putting out a good amount of power.

tuning - do you need to remain obd2 or can you convert to obd1 and still pass inspection?

Re: What to do first, looking for some opinions

Congrats on a well kept prelude.

Compression test would be a good place to start. It'll show you if your priority has to become rebuild first. How much life is left in the bottom and top. It would be tragic if you do all that nice work and your motor becomes a boat anchor soon after.

What's a small budget to you sir?
Some say $2k, others say $10k is a small budget.
Folks can help aim you towards the best bang for your buck if they know what you have in mind as time progresses.

Re: What to do first, looking for some opinions

Well I'm picking the car up in about two weeks so that's when I'll check the compression to see where I'm at. As far as my budget I guess I would like to keep it to about 3-3500 and looking for the best deals with the money I spend and downtime isn't really that big of a deal but I'm a flat rate tech so I work decently fast haha so I don't have to pay for labor unless it's tuning or head/block work .I want the most reliability I can get with a modded setup but still have a quick car that's why I'm thinking basic bolt ons, cams, valve train and up the compression a bit. Also was looking at superchargers but I know this thing would need a rebuild first . Also I don't really want to sleeve the block due to the amount of money it seems to cost from what I have seen for turbo, if I could pick up a built block cheap from a abandon project car I would consider turbo. I thought possibly a supercharger but don't have much experience there and I haven't done much research on that but not out of the questions. I'm going to start this project in May so I have the time to invest in parts and for a game plan as of now I would like a nice sounding quick all motor car(when I say quick I mean somewhere in the 13's)but just looking for some ideas or guidance

Re: What to do first, looking for some opinions

Sounds like you've done a lot of thinking and homework.

Mr. Wings is very knowledgable about car go zoom on a budget.
There's others here too that can tell you what works.. and what don't
Especially folks who have red user names.

So you wanna focus on straight line performance?
Start with a k&n filter, and try to acquire a type s air cleaner box for low $ horsepower upgrade. Others can take it from there.

Re: What to do first, looking for some opinions

Yo man, where you located at geographically? 13's is gonna be a difficult goal to achieve if you're anywhere but sea level on an N/A setup unless you're really prepared to drop some $$. Before I built my motor I ran a 16.2 completely stock in my 4th gen H22 here at 5500ft elevation. It was my first time at the track though and my 60-ft time was balls, so I could have probably brought it to high 15's, but now even after eveything I did, I would hope to hit mid 14's on pump gas, maybe a little quicker on e85. We'll see next spring.

As for parts, everyone has their own opinion as far as a 'streetable/DD' build goes. I figure as long as you don't need to find race gas and still have blinkers and windshield wipers, it's streetable. But for my DD, I wanted to keep all the creature comforts everyone else removes; cruise control, power steering, air conditioner, seats, carpet, my subwoofer, etc. Some parts, like certain headers, are not compatible with air conditioner. Same as some top-mount turbo manifolds aren't compatible with power steering, or possibly cruise control having to go away to make room for a supercharger (which is probably the least cost-effective way to get a $:WHP ratio).

Your research will generate lots of parts-combinations and even more variations in their collective results. The key is not to research how to get to a certain WHP or quarter-mile time, but rather how well different parts compliment each other and what kind of performance they will generate for you. You don't want to get X-pistons and Y-cams because they have a certain aggression factor, and end up having your pistons smash your new valves because you forgot to check the clearances.

Honestly, I'd recommend reading the stickied threads in the General Tech section here, and as many build threads as you can stand to get an idea of what people have already done and had success with. Have fun!
