Heater/Blower Problems in '98 Prelude

Hey all,

I've been having some issues with the heater/blower in my 1998 Prelude. Over the summer I had a few days where the fan would cut out--the temperature would be there (i.e. when I changed the temperature from hot to cold I could feel some air trickling out and temperature had changed properly), but the fan wasn't forcing the air out through the vents, and changing the power level of the fan didn't help at all. A few times when it wasn't working it would randomly start up again after I accelerated quickly and would work for a month or so afterwards. Last week it cut out and hasn't come back on yet--which is a bit of an issue now that it's winter because the windshield defroster isn't working.

I did some research and I think it's the heater/blower motor. Somebody else who had a similar problem in a different forum suggested in their post that the resistor could be at fault, so I tried replacing that over the weekend, but it had no effect. When I replaced it I looked for the motor and couldn't find it in the same area as the resistor (I can post a picture when I get home, but I was looking behind the glove compartment and didn't see the fan assembly, unless it's hidden behind a plate or something).

I have three questions: first, where is the fan assembly located? second, how do I go about replacing it? and lastly, are there alternative diagnoses that I should consider? I looked up the heater/blower fan motor at my local hardware store and it was $250, so if there are other things I could try that would be awesome. Thanks!!! (:

At the top of the 5th Gen section you will find a link to the Honda Repair manuals which you can download and get to work. This is a pretty brutal job though based on my last review of the document. This may not be the issue. You mention that you start and stop and get high revs which would indicate a vacuum leak somewhere which would be good if you can find it.

Anyway, look at the resource guide or the FAQ, the Honda Manuals are a great resource. There are also a ton of articles that you can find via search regarding the heat and ac.

Good Luck, regardless you want the manuals. They are huge so make sure you have a good broadband connection when you go grab them.

Awesome, thanks!! I really hope that's the problem...being without heat in -30 C is horrible.

^^ service manual.

My money is on the fan switch. Pm prelude1897 and see if he has a climate control left from part outs.

Otherwise try car-part.com the national junkyard store.

Re: Heater/Blower Problems in '98 Prelude

hmmmmm, okay. I was more inclined to think the motor because while heat trickles out, there doesn't seem to be any fan activity whatsoever--like it's not stuck on low or high--there's just no propelling power at all. one more question: Canada Parts Online - heater motor does the bottom part in this list (I couldn't find a hyperlink for the popup with the fan motor by itself on it, sorry) look like it would work in an SH? (I'm also worried that maybe I'm not looking at the right part, or that there would be a difference between the base and SH models where the blower motor's concerned). thanks for all of the advice!
