Icon5 White smoke from exhaust? 1999 prelude

Howdy, so I was looking at a prelude on craigslist, and I found one to be my first car. A 99, aftermarket exhaust&cai. Pretty cool stuff on the inside and low miles, overall I really like it. The guy sent me an exhaust clip and when he started it up a little plume of white smoke came out, it was almost 50F. You could maybe see your breath, and then he revved it a little bit and more came out (which I know is normal because of condensation.) But normally I don't think some would come out when starting it. Can I get some answers? Anybody have the same thing happen to them? Help me get my first car!

Re: White smoke from exhaust? 1999 prelude

normally, when it is colder (like that) it will smoke when the motor is cold. that is just the condensation. once the motor warms up there should be little to none. white smoke can be water in the cylinders from a bad head gasket, so if you are worried, check the coolant level and oil, make sure the coolant isn't black (look for pink or green) and look for the oil looking like oil. if water gets in the oil, it will become white and milky.

Thanks for a quick reply! So when I go to take a look at it if either the coolant or oil are discolored I should be worried? I'm going to take a look at it tomorrow and I wish I had a mechanic to take with me!

not necessarily, you should be able to tell if there is oil in coolant. i said you should look for it to be green or pink, but i forgot that often times people will buy "any color" coolant, which often turns it to a shade of brown.

also, a manual car would be better, the auto transmissions in 97 and newer cars aren't very reliable. they improved them in 2000, but there are still failing issues.

Buying A Fifth Gen. - this thread sums up everything you should look for when buying a prelude, in most cases you will want the most stock car you can find, keep in mind to look at whether or not you want to customize the car in the future

5th Gen Auto Transmission Failure Guide - more about the auto transmissions, and how to tell if it is going bad. or you could get a manual, or save up for a transmission swap.
