Is this worth it? Engine Build

I have a shop that is willing to install darton sleeves, bored honed, cp pistons, eagle rods, blueprinted for about 3500 dollars. Does that seem like a fair price to you guys? The shop is well known in the area for building racing motors with honda engines and have done multiple h22a blocks.

Re: Is this worth it? Engine Build

What else are you doing to the motor? What compression pistons are you going with? How will you be tuning the motor?

If you're doing all this as a rebuild because something is wrong and you're going with all OEM-spec parts, that seems a bit steep. If you're going for a performance build, depending on your plans, that may be worth it.

I had my H22 block bored/honed by a local machine shop here for $490, polished and balanced crank for like $30. 11.5:1 C/R pistons were $600 and FRM compatible, and I used OEM rods. Sleeved would have run me an additional $700 or so.

That doesn't include a new bearing set, nor any of the headwork I had done. So as you can see, a good deal depends on how far you're going with it.

Re: Is this worth it? Engine Build

Well I am currently debating on running FE. Doing research. I had plans to rebuild the head for stage 2 cams. But kinda just in a little mental debating game.

If I stay NA I will be running 11.1 cr. though. 9.1 with FE.

The tune I am currently unsure of I have not done enough reading to know about tuning, so would have to find an experienced individual that can tune my ecu for me.

But the end result i would like to achieve would be 250. But if someone has more knowledge and would like to give insight I would be more then happy to hear it.

Re: Is this worth it? Engine Build

Well I will continue to do some more research for what I should have in mind to completely finish with. Part of me wants to go turbo, because it is something that I have always wanted to achieve with a prelude. Don't get me wrong it does take a lot of work/money/knowledge I know this and that is why I have been trying to for the past few weeks. Also if I do turbo I will probably boost low for a while till I understand more about the type of turbo that I do have, since turbos are different between each other.

Re: Is this worth it? Engine Build

Go to CB7Tuner.com - 4th Gen Honda Accord Online Community for more info on turbo's and builds, this accord is a testbed for TONS of 4th/5th gen preludes. And they happen to turbo a lot more than prelude owners. If you want an idea if turbo is right for you, it's them guys.

Think I will stay away from turbos for now. Just build a strong N/A been reading over the resource page.

Re: Is this worth it? Engine Build

If your hoping to get 250hp to the wheel then good luck, especially out of the bs nickel sleeved h22 blocks. If your wanting 250whp prepare to drop about 10k. I just built an h23a vtec and to my surprise it made exactly 200.6 hp to the wheel, with about 6k in parts alone, not including the price to tune. I did all work myself other than the tune so that saved me about 4k in shop labor. I have no bottom end work done either, and that's where the money is. I'm not trying to discourage, i'm just trying to create a realistic picture. an h22 comes with about 155hp to the wheel (I dyno'd my previous h22 bone stock) so I pretty much paid 6 thousand for 45hp. This was a bummer at first but you gotta take it for what it is. If you love your car it's worth it, and I LOOOOVEEE my prelude. If I were to do it again though I would have gone turbo. H23a with low compression pistons cams and about 8-10psi of boost would make about 250whp for half the price I paid for 200whp. GO TURBO!!!! this is my prelude. I put it on cl just to see what I would be offered in case your wondering.

Re: Is this worth it? Engine Build

Turbo would cost you about the same, you'd easily put $6,000 into a solid turbo build to get those numbers. (250HP)
