Icon8 Bad Mechanic. Need Help!

I'll keep this as short as possible because its already been a length endeavor. Basically I wanted to drop a new base engine and tranny into my 99 Prelude SH. A local mechanic said he could do the job for 3150, labor included, in three days. He also said he'd done the swap before so I was pretty confident and he had good reviews on some online sites.

Anyways, 3 days turned into three weeks. I wont go into the details about what happened over those three weeks but now the mechanic just told me hes looking for an SH engine now, without a tranny because the base engine / tranny combo would cost too much. When I asked him why it would be more than the estimate he told me because he would need to replace the wiring harness and ECU as well. He didn't even know how many miles were on the SH engine he was trying to aquire.

I'm kind of at my ends with this garage, but I really want to keep my Prelude. I just cant have her out this long while in school. So I have two questions.

1. Does anyone know of any good mechanics around the Seattle area? I love Speed Factory and I know they would do a good job but I have been having trouble reaching them and they are a bit far away.

2. Does the wiring harness really need to replaced in a sh to base conversion? Same Q with ECU.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Bad Mechanic. Need Help!

As long as the base engine is ODBII, it should be a drop in swap.

Re: Bad Mechanic. Need Help!

As long as its an obd2 engine its a direct swap the SH ecu and harness will work just fine on a base motor I coverted my old SH essentially into a base when I swapped my motor and tranny. But if you get a base engine make sure you get a new transmssion because he sh transmission only works with the SH block. Your mechanic obviously doesn't know what the is talking about and from what it sounds like they aren't very competent. After everything they are making you go through I wouldn't trust em with my car.

Re: Bad Mechanic. Need Help!

Thanks for the responses.

I called up hmotorsonline the next day and spoke to the very friendly guy there. He gave me all the information I needed and I decided the other shop had to go.

Your right he had no idea what he was doing. When I called him back to stop him from doing any more he was trying to push an SH engine with 120k miles on me. When I told him he didn't need to even replace the wiring harness and thats not what we agreed to in the first place he argued with me past a point of reason. After that I told him I was coming for my keys and had a tow truck get it back to my house.

Ordered an H23a vtec and a T2T4 tranny from hmotors and sent them over to speed factory to be installed.

Knew a garage three blocks from my house was too good to be true.
