Icon9 Smoking

Possible head gasket I believe. The other day I was going down the highway and went to pass a semi so I down shifted and go up into vtec while passing looked behind and saw large amount of smoke. Lost power and car couldn't hold idle. Losts of smoke coming out when accelerating or pressing gas pedal down. not much when I am just let it idle. Any words of wisdom would be great.

Re: Smoking

Did you happen to notice what color smoke it was/is? Black smoke-excessive fuel, white smoke-burning coolant(aka bad headgasket), bluish smoke-burning oil.

Re: Smoking

Yea, with whitish/bluish, I would say either head gasket, or piston rings..... Do a compression test

Re: Smoking

Wonder if some nasty stuff in the egr broke loose. I'd not think you'd get the blue-white smoke though but black with that issue.

Maybe valve seals or as stated, rings. Compression test is in order.

Check your oil/coolant to ensure they aren't mixed/mixing.

Re: Smoking

Yea, also smell the exhaust, if it's sweet smelling then you have coolant leaking into your combustion chamber/s.

Re: Smoking

Has anyone removed pistons while having the engine in the car? I believe it would be pretty simple to do, just not sure where to support the vehicle since 1 motor mount is off since the head was removed. currently the motor is supported from underneath with wooden blocks on a jack agaisnt the oil pan. I was thinking of changing out my pistons since from my understanding of engines makes me believe that my number 3 rings are shot, but would like some input. hoping for speedy response trying to get my car back on the road before classes start.

Re: Smoking

... Did you do a compression test??

And I'm sure it can be done, you will need to drop the oil pan though, and get at it from underneath the car, which means if you don't trust the other mounts supporting the engine then finding another spot to support the block from. But it would be a good chance to change out all your rings, some gaskets etc, **** while your at it might as well do your timing belt too

Re: Smoking

Sadly I did not get a chance to do the compression test. My dad was up for helping me do this job as some quality time and he pretty much had the head ready to go before I even got to the garage. But here are some photos of the engine.

although at this point you probably have major damage to the cylinder wall and piston.

Re: Smoking

Would probably be cheaper to source a new block. In that first pic of the cylinder and cylinder walls, if your fingernail catches on where the wall looks chewed up, the engine is done (bottom-right in the picture). Re-sleeving/bore & hone, new pistons, rings, etc. plus the cost of labor would be more than dropping in a new motor.
