WEIRD shifting problem lol

2000 Honda Prelude Base - Automatic

OK, here is the deal. If I start the car in neutral it shifts perfect BUT if I start it in park the D4 light starts flashing, shifts hard from park to reverse and reverse to drive and it doesn't shift into 3rd and 4th gear.

The check engine light I have is P1705 - "Short in Transmission Range Switch Circuit (More than one range position is on at the same time)"

My guess so far is the neutral safety switch because I think these cars aren't supposed to start in neutral.

What do you guys think?

Re: WEIRD shifting problem lol

The automatic transmissions in the 5th gens are incredibly unreliable, and more often than not, fail.

You probably need a new one. Or better yet, a 5 speed swap!

Do you have a service manual Tremor?

If not the diy has them. Chapter 14(?) is the auto tranny chapter.

Ahh the auto tranny chapter of the FSM... it's pages stained and curled from the tears of those who have gone before. :p

bykfixer is right though, you shouldn't automatically condemn it as unfixable, because it may just be one part thats acting up. However, don't be surprised if it turns out to be the end of the line for your transmission.

Re: WEIRD shifting problem lol

How many miles are there on your car, or that transmission?

I believe the transmission range switch is what tells the TCM which gear the car is in, and activates the corresponding solenoid that controls each gear/clutch I'm not 100% SURE about this on the prelude, but on a 2003 Honda odyssey that same switch controls the PRND lights on the cluster. I can try my best to help you, as I have had quite the experience with that Odyssey's PITA auto transmission.....

There is a control shaft inside of the transmission, which extrudes out of the housing on either side. One side is connected to your shift linkage, and the other side to the range position switch. Inside of the transmission, this shaft turns when you change gears with the gear selector, and does whatever mechanical business inside, and turns the range position switch, which should control the solenoids/dash lights.

Sounds like to me that you probably should just replace that switch, but you can try to re-calibrate it. I think the switch is supposed to be on the outside of the transmission and can be accessed by removing the wheel. It has a black cover on it. I'm not too sure how to calibrate it again but I'm sure you can find it with a bit of searching. I would do it for you but I'm too tired now

I found the part # for the range switch: 28900-P6H-013, SENSOR ASSY, POSITION

Also, have you had any OTHER issues with your lights on the dash?

Re: WEIRD shifting problem lol

No, my car doesn't seem to have any other issues whatsoever and the transmission seems to shift absolutely perfect as long as the car is started in neutral. It does have 200k miles but if it aint broke, don't fix it. People are so quick to say throw the automatic transmissions in the trash on here lol. I get it, they have a horrible reputation. I prefer my 5 speed preludes over this auto one, too.

Anywho, I ordered a new transmission range switch.

Re: WEIRD shifting problem lol

No prob.
The auto tranny for the 5th gen has a much deserved bad reputation. With that said there are a shload of them out there running just fine.

The ones left need all the love they can get imo. The automatic 5th gen was a fine automobile when new. Honda usually gets it right. But like the B21 engine, which was also prone to catastraphe in many cases, Honda missed the mark compared to their typical reliability.
