Clutch Chatter...

Soo I was driving My 99 SH home a few nights ago and I decided to romp on the car and got up to 117mph, after that my clutch felt weird, ie it was hard to get in gear, just 4th and 5th. I got to a light and put it in ist and the car studdered a little bit, I started flipping out lol. Got her home and looked under the hood to my surprise the slave cylinder was leaking, that was a bad nite. Next morning I go and get a slave cylinder and throw it in, not a fun job and bleeding the system just terrible. So I get the car back up and running but the dam stutter it still there...fml. Next I happen to check the master and I pull in the clutch and let it out a lil bit and I here like it looses pressure soo back to the store I go. Put that part in Bled the system blah blah blah lol. Ok now the car does it a tiny bit in ist gear, I heard that I might of warped the flywheel a little bit but I don't know, the car shifts fine in all the gears. So that's what up im to now, looking to order a clutch kit and flywheel soon. thank god im kinda mechanically inclined cause if I had someone put the master and slave cylinder in plus bleed the system, forget about it. they would prolly charge me a arm and a leg lol. dam this is the price I get for beating on my Whip...Has anyone else experienced clutch chatter before?

Re: Clutch Chatter...

that's what I thought too, my cousin has a m3 with a performance clutch. when its idling u can hear it "chatter" When I let the clutch out while giving it gas it stutters a little bit. I got all the air out of the lines when I bled the system and the slave cylinder is working perfectly to engage and disengage the clutch. I don't understand, its making me bug out

Re: Clutch Chatter...

The only chatter i hear comes from my toy car, but TBH, the first clutch/fly are considered stage 2(~350hp), my current is stage 3?(up to 500hp). Like Wing said, oem, nope.

Could you confirm you have stock? Places blowout stage 1-3 clutches/flywheel combos for factory money. New old stock and junk

Re: Clutch Chatter...

It's a Exedy oem clutch about 8yrs old with 73k miles on it. It shifts fine just 1st and sometimes reverse when I let the clutch out it shakes like I'm not giving it enough gas but I am. Feels like maybe I didn't get all the air out of the line or their are tiny air bubbles that gotta work their way out, maybe?

Re: Clutch Chatter...

Or maybe you need to work on your abilities to drive manual more... That was an honest post too, I'm not trying to be a dick...

But after retreading your post you might just be paranoid... I had a bad wheel and had to drive on it for a few days and heard and howling noise kind of like a wheel bearing... After replacing with new wheels, and bearings to be on safe side... Needed it anyway, I thought I slightly still heard it for a few days, but my girl said she didn't... But who knows maybe I'm just crazy

Re: Clutch Chatter...

I went on YouTube to check out clutch chatter and most of the videos I saw is what my car is actually doing, they all call it the same thing.

Re: Clutch Chatter...

Do some searching about the locknut on the clutch pedal, mine chattered until I adjusted it a bit and I found the sweet spot for it to sit. It happened when the car warmed up to me not when cold. You have a certain amount of clearance between the clutch face and flywheel, and you lose some of that clearance due to thermal expansion... The clutch and flywheel warm up and get bigger. And partially engage even when your foot is not on the pedal.. Do a quick search on that here and try it out. It is quick painless and you may just fix it. Or make it worse, be sure to mark where it is before you move it..
I've also read that it could be from throwout bearing or a loose shift fork. When you go to your shift fork next to the slave and try to move the fork by hand, can you basically "shake hands with it" ? I think that is related to a pivot bearing tho, all ccould be issues, but the easiest to start with is to tighten you clutch pedal locknut a little bit.

here is a quick little search result No more CLUTCH PROBLEM threads!!!no-more-clutch-problem-threads.html

but ya, at the end of the day, it can be from upgraded race components, but thats the price we pay for that, stock should be quiet, my exedy made noise, but I ruled it out with 3 or 4 trial and error adjustments

Re: Clutch Chatter...

Ok so I went outside and checked the clutch fork and there was no play and the slave cylinder is holding pressure, thank god lol. when I put the new master in I matched the shaft with the old one, I think I can raise the clutch engagement a little bit, but I don't want to bottom out the cylinder if I adjust it too much. i drove it home tonite from work and it only stuttered once in ist gear.

awesome guess, and related to my next one... I was going to add that I messed up my clutch because I degreased and sprayed the engine down without having the tranny plug in.. but same scenario, oily, gooey, wet clutch means ruined..

Re: Clutch Chatter...

yea I cant lie, my rear main seal is leaking lol, but its been fine up to this point. I still get the stutter in ist just a little bit but in reverse its gone, maybe the oil is burning off the flywheel, I don't know
