I need a new Engine

I just bought what I thought was a good deal 1999 Prelude SH. I pulled a major **** up as it was the only car I didn't test drive properly party because of the area. Found out today it has a fairly large hole in a piston which I believe is cylinder number 3(checked with borescope). I don't know how long the hole has been there and don't have the time to do a rebuild unless it's going to be cheaper which I doubt.

I'd like to get a JDM engine closed deck block. I will probably get the engine and tranny together to just drop in. Who is a good company to buy from? Which motor and trannys will fit? There's also the motors from the euro accord type R with the LSD, will these drop in well and not cause problems?

I am a hardcore motorcylist and motorcycle racer. This is my first car. The body and interior are in good shape so I believe the car is worth the investment. The car is primarily a daily driver but currently a driveway babysitter. I plan on doing some autocross and trackdays with the car aswell. My goal for the car would be to keep it N/A and between 200-250rwhp when I'm finish not with just the swap. The car has lot of other mods like MSD ignition and ****. I want to keep the car honda or really good components.

Pistons are cheap, the hours that go into the rebuild will cost you.
If you want this to be a reliable track car, you need to rebuild from the ground up. At least do all the seals and main bearings. The head needs a good check, what cause a hole in the piston ? did it kiss a valve ? That would be bad, you would need to check the valve galleys to see if they are still true.

Welcome to the site, rebuilds are intense, get to research !

Re: I need a new Engine

Welcome aboard....
Ah the ole wanna make the SH 250hp na thing again...

There are a few ways to go. If you want to keep the atts intact you stick with SH drivetrain. If that don't matter, then the sky's the limit..

The atts will assist in the fun factor on the track though. If you go type s motor n tranny you start out with 210-220 hp depending on your pollution controls. If you live in exhaust testing land, good luck.

Like static said, lots of research involved. Check out the 5th gen resource guide for a starting point.

There's some good importers and not so good, but if you buy a used motor it would be wise to rebuild it. So why not rebuild your current engine with type s stuff? Cams, pistons etc.

Re: I need a new Engine

The only JDM engine that's plug and play with an SH is a Type-S. Anything else requires more work due to the differences between the ATTS and non-ATTS models.

Re: I need a new Engine

yes, it is wise to rebuild a used engine that has been bought from a third party (such as tigerjapense), as you dont know how long it has been sitting in the warehouse. my advice would be find someone who is parting out there wrecked prelude in your area, and see if you can start up the engine and hear it run before you pull it. or rebuild your current, which is what I did, not as hard as you might expect, but it is pricey if you do the whole nine yards (port & polish head, sleeve block of you plan to go N/A). Type-S upgrades to your current engine are possible if you rebuild yours. otherwise if you buy a type-s engine, you have to tear it down to replace the seals and give everything a once over, which is probably going to be a little cheaper in the long run if you do the rebuild yourself.
