Clutch Issues

Within the last week my clutch pedal has felt significantly softer. The clutch is not slipping but shifting has gotten a bit notchy. I'm wondering if either the master or slave is going out but I can't see any fluid leaks that usually accompany failing cylinders. Can they go bad without leaking? The fluid in the clutch resevoir is very dirty.

I really hope it's not the pressure plate fatiguing. I don't wanna do a clutch ATM!

Re: Clutch Issues

Try flushing the system with some fresh fluid.

Re: Clutch Issues

Thanks for the responses, gentlemen. I actually nailed the diagnosis the first time this round! I'm batting like .333 lately which isn't that great when it comes to keeping budget and making efficient repairs.

I picked up new master and slave clutch cylinders and went to town. The two were easy enough to take out and, despite no obvious leaks, both were noticeably weaker than the replacements. Now, only if installation was as easy as removal! I think I hate flare fittings the most out of any connection. The slave cylinder was also ridiculously hard to install while compressing it enough to fit in place AND match the mounting bolts up.

Ok, everything back in, fill it up with new fluid and start to bleed. I hear a leak as soon as I start and sure enough the quality AutoZone MC has a leak from the plug end. Great. Whatever, out it comes and on my way to secure replacement.

An hour later and I'm back to the bleed process. If I didn't have a vacuum pump I don't think I could have gotten this to bleed. It took me 30 minutes to get the fluid started and the air out but after a total of 5 hours the Prelude shifts beautifully again and the clutch pedal has great feel. I just need to adjust it a bit more because it's a little too far out for my liking.

The upside is it was a $40 fix as opposed to a $300+ clutch job. It only took me a few hours less though, which was frustrating but at least it's done. >.<

Re: Clutch Issues

You do all that alone?

Either way... great to hear.

Re: Clutch Issues

Yeah that slave cylinder was a pain for me also. Glad you got the issue fixed. And yeah it's possible to do by yourself, it just takes more time.

Re: Clutch Issues

The clutch pedal is not meant to be adjusted.

Just saying.... you will ride the clutch if you choose to change the engagement height.

There is supposed to be slight free-play at the top of the pedal release.

Re: Clutch Issues

I did have some help with the bleeding, Mike.

Thanks for the encouragement, I am glad to have some positive feel again.

Wing, I should clarify I need to adjust the master cylinder rod, not necessarily the clutch pedal itself. Why would it ride the clutch if it were adjusted? There is obvious adjustment and a locking nut.
