Icon5 Prelude type SH belt problem

Hi guys! New here, just wanted to share my bad problem for any advice!

So i recently bought this lude 1997 type SH and I worked all day on my car beginning from the engine cooler gasket, then brakes, oil change , new spark plugs ( NGK iridium ) washed my air filter ( i think i cracked the rubber part on the throttle) and then i changed my alternator belt. (you also have to take out power steering one). SO i started the car and it made a strange noise from the engine, and then i heard noise from one of my pulley could find wich one.

After that, i tried releasing tension maybe, then i tried raising it and finally when i put brake fluid there were no more noises. (but i saw my crank pulley waving a bit) So i tried the car again and then i heard a whistling so to be sure what i did i just pull out the power steering belt to see wich one made the noise!

Then the nightmare comes.. when i did my roadtests my alt belt started to squeal hard, i went back to the garage to finally see that it was tearing some part of it and some pieces went into my t-belt( since i had no cover at the moment) I cant take it out its stuck.. what shoould i do? and the belt was brand new i couldnt understand why when i take power steering belt off the other one goes bad.

Sorry for the long post but i had to clarify things since i really need help out there. where to start? what was the problem? (all was tighten proprely and i had no problem at the beginning of the day. Any idea?

Re: Prelude type SH belt problem

Try turning your crankshaft pulley with a long breaker bar to move the t-belt so as maybe to free the hunks of alternator belt. May have to work it back n forth.
Your crank pulley wobbles. It's known as a harmonic balancer. Inside a standard production engine things are not perfectly balanced like the custom engines that have been 'balanced'.. Some wobble is normal. It loox freaky but fear not young padowon...

You probably either didn't have the belt tight enough or it was not lined on the crank pulley/alternator in a correct way.
When you replace the alt belt, tighten the adjuster bolt until the belt has less than a 1/2" of play. Way less. There should be hardly any. You may have to finesse the hinge point that the adjuster screws into as it pivots upwards towards the front of the car as you screw in the adjuster screw.
Then you tighten down the 12 mm axle type screw at the base of the alternator. Then you tighten the 14mm bolt at the top of the alternator.

Btw you do not have to remove the ps belt. You need to move the ps resevior out of the way to gain access to the alternator screws though.
Just advised another a step by step how to change an alternator on a 97 SH last week. Tools too... My son and I had the loose belt thing too.

ALTERNATOR HELP

And lastly put a dab of grease on the bolts. Will stay snug just fine but later down the road no need for wd40 to break them free. Just enough to coat the threads. I work the screw 3-4 times to get the grease on down in the threads then wipe off the excess.

Re: Prelude type SH belt problem

Yes thanks for the detailed comment!! But they were tighten correctly ( not with the specs tho but it really not the first one im doing). But why would the pulley make that noise ( not a belt squeal ) ? and it was well aligned on the pulley but at the end it wasnt no more lol. i might be wrong but im almost sure it was in it. Anyways thanks for advice ill take a look closely tomorrow! but i dont get how you pu alt belt without taking out ps one since its in front of it o.0

Re: Prelude type SH belt problem

Hmmm, you have a point. Guess the ps belt does need removal first.

Why the pulley was noisy (not belt squeal) could've overtight issue.
If it was correctly aligned I have no idea why it came apart...

Re: Prelude type SH belt problem

Just finished repairing it!! The problem was my crank pulley (Harmonic balancer). I knew it waving too much :P It was broken at the rubber part so its why the alt belt went out. I replaced it with a jubber one for 200$CAN (im from quebec), washed all residues of alt belt in my t-belt they way you said and everythings works fine now!! but i discovered many other problems while repairing that one haha still more work to do! Thanks

Re: Prelude type SH belt problem

It was good your belt broke... otherwise the harmonic balancer disintigration could have been dreadful.
Phew.
