Re: High Mileage Ludes

How many miles are on your Gen 4

Here are some stories of 4th gen mileage.

Don't live at the red line. But don't stomp it at low rpm's either. The motor lives longer when you don't abuse it. Low end too.
Keep the oil changed, timing belt fresh and belts n hoses good and your car will go on to double what you have now.
For added insurance get the biggest capacity oil filter you can find. Larger means for metal shaving stay in the filter between oil changes... folks who get a million miles say that's one of their secrets.

Re: High Mileage Ludes

At 147k miles my engine doesn't burn a drop of oil. Burning a qt a week is a sign of a engine that needs rebuilding. 185k is high but I've seen our engines go to 300k easily.

Yes - burns oil. Always check...
Great advice from bykfixer.
The Prelude will take care of you if you take care of her.

Enjoy the drive!

Re: High Mileage Ludes

Oil oil oil. Not only are H motors notorious for burning oil, they FRM sleeves are designed to "consume" oil. It's somewhat of a nuisance but I can't really complain about a motor with 200k miles and perfect compression.

It all depends on previous owners. Some neglect, some keep up on maintanance

Re: High Mileage Ludes

I guess Im lucky, I burn no oil at all. I check it every other day or weekly and I haven't had to top of the oil in months since the last oil change. Thats with hitting vtec once or twice a week. It's always at the 2nd dot on the dipstick.

Dont forget to change the anti freeze, and when you replace your brake pads it would be a good idea to flush and change the brake fluid as well. keep on top of clutch fluid level, Ive seen a few 5th gens around my area that seem to be low on clutch fluid every now and then anybody else have this issue? Oh and check under carriage, (CV boots ect) don't want a cv axle busting on you on the freeway.

The same here. Never have to add oil, and motor is as strong as day one. Then also i always looked after her since i bought new in 1997. Only done 170000 km. in 16 years.

Very true, same as a BMW M3, if you give it sticks, it is made to burn oil. I maybe use the vtec also just about 2 or 3 times a week. My commute to work is only 13 km. that is fairly open road, in town i just doodle along.

Glad to see you mention the FRM. They did good by the time the 5th motors were built vs the B21. But that's why I mentioned biggest oil filter you can find. The FRM vs piston rings battle rages on lol...

Just rolled over to 182,000 and still runs like a raped ape. As everyone is saying, basic maintenance goes a long way.
