an unreal to-do list

I guess this is my first REAL post.

I'm a novice (not quite n00b) with autos, but I'm trying to learn more. A couple of friends of mine educate me on their cars (ford lightning and pontiac gp), but I think I need more specific help. This is one thing that I've been wondering about since I've started looking around the forums.

If I wanted to 'max out' my prelude, what would I need to do (money is no object, at least not for this list)? Let's assume that I want to keep the stock engine.

I've already gathered that I need to replace the air intake (planning on an AEM V2 CAI) and put on a catback (greddy?) or just replace the entire exhaust system and put on a header. A rating of technical difficulty on each item would also be appreciated.

FYI: 2000 lude, 2.2L DOHC VTEC, 4-speed sportshift (i'm guessing this is base?)

Thanks, and please no n00b flaming.

First, welcome to PZ

You've got great ideas, Intake/Header/Exhaust are your basic, "bolt-ons." After you've completed those three, you can then look for more ideas...

Here's my rating for installing these items on a scale from 1-10:

1)AEM V2 Intake - 4. Should take you less than 2 hours if it's your first time.

2)Cat-back system - 8. Why is this rated so high? b/c of the location of the part, you have to crawl underneath the car and reach/locate some seriously stubborn bolts that probably wont come off without some serious elbow grease

3)Header/Exhaust manifold - 6. Not as difficult as removing the entire exhaust system, but nonetheless, you have to crawl underneath the car to remove it.

I suggest whenever you get the exhaust system and header, you can take it to a shop as they have lifts(which makes everything so much easier and convenient).

OH, and we dont flame people here, even if you are a n00b. We simply do not allow that

Thanks. I think it's going to be a while before I get the the catback or header, I'm low on cash now and GHIII's coming out soon!

Guess I'll try to get some more hours....

I don't really want to max it out, I'm just trying to get an idea of what I can do to it.

I saw a video of a turbo prelude last night, and I've decided that before I die, I'm going to own one.

Lol. "before I die i'm going to own one" i like that one hehe. I say stay off the bolt ons for a while and just drive the car. get used to it, see if you really like it and think of the consequences all the added power and bolts on will do to the car/gas and performance before you start

That's a pretty pessamistic way of looking at it. I mean, focusing on death? I would say "I've decided that while I'm alive I am going to own one"

Anyways...

The fifth gen Prelude (even in auto form, just like mine ) is a great car, as you've no doubt heard. However if you want to increase performance a great deal then you do have to spend a great deal of money.

Intake, Header, Exhaust (or I/H/E as it's commonly known) and a tune with a VAFC or APexi Neo will net you around 110-120kW* atw, which is about 160HP.

A mild set of cams will probably push it to 130kW* but that's about the limit of the piggyback ECUs. It'll be at that point that you need to decide if you're going NA or turbo. If turbo, then decomp the engine, bigger cams, etc.

* Figures from what has been achieved previously on H22s with these mods.

Yeah, with my finances right now, it'd be something like college or a turbo.... tough choice, eh?

While I do plan to own a turbo'd lude before I die, I also plan to own one while I'm alive. I hope I don't drive slowly when I'm old.

^^ i like how you listed a turbo as easier to install than clutch and flywheel. makes it sound like its something easy to do.

well if you just want a list of what a max'd out h22 looks like:
Custom intake manifold
Custom headwork (Endyn, RLZ engineering, PocketRockets)
Custom grind camshafts (Endyn, RLZ engineering, PocketRockets)
3.0L offset bored block, custom crank, custom rods
Custom Endyn rollerwave pistons
AEM ems, NepTune, Hondata, Motec, Autotronic...or whatever engine management

you could easily spend 20k on the motor.

how much of a risk is there to run a turbo at like 8psi on a stock engine? if your not ready to upgrade internals will a stock h22 be able to handle turbo even running that low of boost

i know ppl that have cars running 5-7 and have it for about a year but u run a big risk of having it blow and having to have a lot of time and money to have it fixed twokexlv6coupe's turbo lude just blew it was running i think 5.8 to me its just not worth the risk ur 1/4 mile will be in the 14-15 and i know ppl on hear that have n/a cars doing that now so just save up and have it built then u can run like 10 or more depending on how u build it now don't that sound sooooooo much better the 8 :):)

Yes, college definitely comes before the lude. I figure that once I'm through, I can squeeze a little off of the $80k+ I'll hopefully be making.

Can someone either explain or point me to a post on the engines? I keep seeing F22 and H22 and stuff, but I don't know what they mean. I have a sneaking suspicion that there's something on them in the resource guides.... I'll go check.
