99 Prelude Base needs Engine Swap Help

Hey there,

I'm almost a complete novice with cars and preludes in general, so please bear with me.

I purchased a 99 base prelude in October '12 (California) and it died on me near the end of November. It suddenly started having a knocking sound while idle and literally died on me while on the road (this is the sound its making: )

I've taken it to two Honda mechanics and they told me it needs a new engine. The latest mechanic offered to rebuild the entire engine, but it will be expensive. So I opted to search for a replacement engine.

Now, I know what just popped into a lot of your minds, "hmotorsonline.com". I've been in contact with them for the past 2 or so weeks and they do not have my engine in stock. They have the Euro spec one, but I don't have the money for that, nor do I want it (I'm not going to be racing, I just need to get to work on my own). They also have the H23A VTEC motor, but I'm fearing failing smog and engine legality with that (I've heard that you really want the same engine or newer) and I know its less powerful, although it doesn't matter to me, I'd like to sell this car later on and that may be a downfall.

I honestly would order from hmotors in a heartbeat, but they don't have my motor :|

So now I'm looking for other places, and I find engines at various websites, but then later find terrible reviews for each site. I'm becoming a bit hopeless here, and its been a good 2-3 months now since I've even seen my car.

So, I'm wondering

1 - Any alternatives to hmotorsonline
2 - If I should just sell it (I want to avoid this at all costs :|)

Please help me out, its my first car and I really do not want to sell it :| It took me forever to find a car, and I really do not want to do it again...

PS: Pics

Re: 99 Prelude Base needs Engine Swap Help

remember that its wise to rebuild that "new" engine also, you dont know how much miles it has and how long it has been in some warehouse

so its not that simple that you just slap it in there

Right. I have the latest mechanic quoting me for swapping the engine and replacing pretty much everything that you should replace for $1200. He also wanted to rebuild the engine for $2200. Total is $3400. When the total is that high, its really not worth it considering I bought the car for $4200.

Re: 99 Prelude Base needs Engine Swap Help

Try 'jspecauto.com' . About $1200 will get you a used H22 delivered to your door for $189 s&h. They import directly from japan motors that.. well read the home page. They are near my town and have a good reputation. I reccomend them to friends. (All 2 of them lol) It's pretty complete too so your mechanic should be able to install it for less.
If you are going to keep the car and fix it up, say like restoration or mild build up, that kind of dough is worth it. But you won't get back everything you spent if you sell it.

I've heard a lot of mixed reviews for jspecauto.com... They also have one of the highest prices I've seen for H22As...

Re: 99 Prelude Base needs Engine Swap Help

I wouldn't hesitate to get a used long block and swap it in. Most come with a warranty and are supposedly compression checked and oil pressure checked before sale. Many people in the car scene around here have had good luck with such swaps. Have your mechanic replace the belts and water pump, fresh fluids and you should be good to go.

If he is a reputable mechanic/shop I would also look into having him rebuild it depending on the warranty.

Good luck. Don't give up!

Right, I'm not hesitant either. I just want to make sure the place I'm buying from has the engine and it is reliable and wont break down on me a few months down the road, because I seriously do not want to waste my money...

And yes, I've already ordered an engine before and it never came, ended up disputing the charge to get my money back :| Turns out the company trying to sell it to me didnt even have it in the first place.

You could always f22/23 for the time being, those engines run about 400-800$ and plentiful. A little secret: they like turbo.

but you HAVE TO rebuild that new engine also or you could face same problems soon with it

new clutch, new seals/gaskets, new timing belt-things, new ignition parts and so on

maintenance cost. these are not cheap cars to keep going. now you pay for previous owners poor maintenance
its just that do you make now the same mistakes what they did

Right, but that rebulid is all exterior, and that is all included in the labor my mechanic quoted me for.

Yes, I'm paying for the previous owner's poor maintenance (I feel dumb letting this happen in the first place considering I could have avoided it...) and I intend on taking care of the new engine.

Anyway, I'm leaning towards this engine, can anyone here provide insight on the company / let me know if they see something off with the description / any red flags?

14 Day start up time period is pretty short. I'd make sure you have all your ducks in a row as far as the mechanic and his completion time.

Re: 99 Prelude Base needs Engine Swap Help

Man if I were you I would just have the mechanic rebuild the engine. If your gonna pay that much for it anyway. A little extra and, BAM - refurbed engine instead of not knowing what your getting. If its not worth that much to you then sell it. Or look for a wrecked car that still runs and have the engine swapped to your car. There are 2 of them around me for $1000 or less for the whole car that still run. But I would just do it myself.
Just my opinion.

$2200 for rebuilding the engine, I cant afford that :(.

I am also looking out for cars I can extract an engine from, but so far there aren't any near me :(

That sucks, well not much to do but try and find a cheap used one and hope it runs for a while, or get rid of it.

Its either

1) Let mechanic rebuild and put it back in + common service things (oil, etc) for ~ $3400 ($2200 for rebuild, $1200 for labor)

2) Find a used engine and have him replace all necessary exterior parts + common service things for ~$2400 est. (I'm aiming for $1200ish for the engine, $1200 for labor)

This topic is not about whether I need to spend more money or not. I was simply asking if anyone had reliable sources of engines and whether I should just sell and move on rather than deal with this.
