Rebuild Advice :)

hey yall,
so i'm planning on rebuilding my motor before i bring the car out for the summer. it has 260,000 kms on it so its getting old and tired. burns oil and compression tests put a couple cylinders at about 150 psi so i think a rebuild is in order :).
i'm planning on boring ou the block and going with all new (except for the crank). i'm not doing a turbo setup (don't have that much money) so i don't need anything too fancy. i do want to put in stage one cams though. what brands would you recommend and what advice would you offer? should i bother replacing the valves? I also want to dress it up a little. paint the block. redo the exhaust from the head to the tail pipe. i'm gonna replace the alternator and starter. anyways any advice on brands or how i should do it would be good. thanks yall :)

Re: Rebuild Advice :)

you cannot bore. much. its sleeves or just honing. your best option is to go with standard size type s/r or mahle gold pistons (type s/r pistons are much cheaper)

skunk2 pro1 cams are pretty ok in dd use (I have those myself), then better valvetrain parts with new valve seals. I didnt bother to get new valves, machine shop just check'd the old ones out.

seals/gaskets/new clutch, maybe lighter flywheel, bottom bearings, timing belt-parts, chipped ecu and obd1 conversion harness...

you should really also think about some proper header and intake manifold!

stock intake manifold can be little restrictive if you raise compression and get new cams. so the best (and also cheapest) option is skunk2 or blacktrax ported IM (IMO euro r is just too expensive when you compare the price to gains)

for exhaust: 2,5/3" high flow cat and 70mm custom catback
header: vibrant, logic, hytech rep

if you have bone stock car, you probably need something like 5-6k for parts

$ wise, how much is not much?

Some say $10 grand aint much. To me $2k is a lot. What's your perspective?

Re: Rebuild Advice :)

yeah i'm looking to stay under 3k. i actually just ordered a DC stainless header and downpipe. i already have cat back exhaust and i have a clutchmasters stage one clutch and light flywheel. need to find a high flow cat now. i work at a ford dealership so my access to tools is good, so i'm not paying anything for labor. still, i'm trying to get a better hold on what i should really do and what doesn't really need to be done. thanks though for the thoughts so far TypeT. I was wondering about the intake manifold cause i would like to get the head ported. should i upgrade the throttle body?

gains cost. you cannot really get much with 3k

again: you have to upgrade everything to get gains. chaging one part or two doesnt mean much

with stock cams and compression theres no point

you could buy proper header & exhaust then port your head and get better intake manifold. after those - chipped ecu and tune. with 3k you cannot do much anything else but then again you still have leaking piston rings there

or then just put that 3k to maintenance parts. you have to choose now what to do. you just cannot do build AND maintenance/rebuild with that kind of money

Re: Rebuild Advice :)

so i have def gone over my initial 3k... hah
i'm crossing all my t's and dotting my i's though as well. replacing my distributor, alternator, starter and rad. i'm staying with stock internals except for cams. gonna do just a stage 1 cam. i've got a new intake and throttle body coming and bunch of other new parts on top of replacing all my bearings and seals and gaskets and the oil pan. lots of work to do over the next couple months!

Re: Rebuild Advice :)

^ theres no point of changing your stock intake (if its still intact), just get better filter there

short rams are just downgrade
