Icon8 what to do WHAT TO DO

I have a 2001 lude base, h22a4, manual tranny. When driving my car will not shift into 5th gear at all. When i try to put it into 5th it just grinds. I have tried double clutching, changing tranny fluid with syncromesh, honda MTF, and another brand...nothing. I can do most repairs on cars EXCEPT anything to do with a tranny....so what should i do? Would it be cheaper to just buy a different tranny and have it put in or take it somewhere and have it broke down? (the thing that worries me is around here the shops will take your tranny out, open it up, AND THEN give you a price. If you dont get your car fixed by them they give you back your transmission as is (ripped out of the car).
thoughts on what it might be? that is the only gear that i have problems with...all other shift smooth and perfect

Re: what to do WHAT TO DO

Also, would a 4th gen tranny be a direct fit into a 5th gen? both have h22a's.

Sounds like the synchro could already be toast. You don't have any problems with reverse? Synchromesh won't fix a bad synchro, just bandaid once that are partially damaged and prevent further wear. How many miles on the car?

Re: what to do WHAT TO DO

I would recommend finding a good used transmission and swap it in. It will probably be the easiest and cheapest method. I NEVER will take my transmission to a shop to rebuild, unless it's an auto and even then I am always wary. 80% of the stories I hear is that the transmission is never quite "right" afterwards.

Re: what to do WHAT TO DO

Contact your honda dealer about it. It was an issue a while ago. They may fix it for ya as a recall.

There's a tsb about it. 5th grind. Honda tech has all tsb for your car.

and since no one answered the question... yes a 4th gen tranny would fit on your 5th gen.

Re: what to do WHAT TO DO

i have been on the phone all morning with dealership and honda customer complaints. customer complaints saying i have to go through a honda dealership and that they cant/wont do anything because it was never recalled....on a service bulletin. Dealership giving me the run around. waiting for a return call from the guy that makes the decisions about fixing under "good faith" or something. Im half tempted to pull the tranny and drive up there with it, walk through their show room dripping fluid every where. maybe i can get something done then lol
