Cutting/programming another key

I know this subject has been been touched on multiple times, but I can't seem to find my answer via searching. When I bought my prelude, I was given one Grey key. I want to get another key that opens and starts the car. I know the grey key is the valet key. Honda is telling me I have to buy a key for $20 and then pay an hours worth of labor to program it. Is this true? I'm reading they have a machine in the back that can duplicate the chip in the key for the immobilizer in the car.

Re: Cutting/programming another key

Only certain dealerships have the proper machine that can duplicate a key without the red key. If your dealership says they can do it - then they more than likely have that machine/computer.

I paid around $70 total to have a key made, so that sound about right in cost.

What's the name of your dealer wing?

My local says $125 per blank and $5-600 to reprogram the imobilizer.
I said 'no thanx'

125 sounds more like the cost of them supplying and programing the key vs you supplying and just having them program.

touching the immobilizer in general is expensive so 600+ is normal for that...

I just wanted a key to unlock the door lol.

Thinking of having a locksmith redo my deal and cut some keys.

if you just need a key to unlock the door - any keyshop/hardware store can do that for you.

Re: Cutting/programming another key

The big box stores in my area won't touch it and they drove off the local small stores that used to help a brutha out.

That's why I figured a locksmith..

A locksmith will do it as well.

The only reason to pay Honda to touch a key is if you need the key programed.

Oops, there was a question by op. Sorry oehawks3

Big box store do it for ya? You have a black key?

Mine only came with a black key and a blank key, I spose that's like your gray one. Doors and trunk only. Probably gonna mount it inside the gas filler door.

Doesn't help if you're locked out of the car and can't open the gas door

I know of a few clever places to hide a key. requires a magnet key hider box

Re: Cutting/programming another key

Good point^^

Pocket knife/ nail clippers/ coins/ credit card etc opens the gas door

If you saw my car, you'd understand the resulting scratch would likely go un noticed.

Years ago when dropping off my kids and the x wife's my son accidently locked the door on my running truck. (5th gen's have that covered btw) it's pouring rain, I'm barefoot and locked out. Go to the x and ask for a coat hanger or take 2x4 to the rear window...
I gladly picked the broken glass outta my feet and @$s later.

Later I found out a credit card woulda got me in.
