Anybody got straight pipes? What are your thoughts?

I currently have a magnaflow round muffler with 2.5 piping and a resonator. It sounds like pooooo. Ive been debating about running just pipe instead of my muffler (keep the resonator and cat to cut down on the rasp). And yes, I have watched every video of a straight pipe prelude but I need some input. Anybody got straight pipes on your car, and what are your thoughts?

Re: Anybody got straight pipes? What are your thoughts?

you will have to shout at your passengers and invest in a big stereo system to be able to hear it. i haven't heard a prelude straight piped, but i have seen 2 3000gt that have them (one full straight piped, one no resonater, no cat, and blown muffler) and both were very annoying not only to the driver, but to everybody around.

IMO invest in a good cat back system. you want it to sound good to you, and to sound good but not obnoxious to everybody else on the road.

Re: Anybody got straight pipes? What are your thoughts?

I've heard the cat does very little for muffling sound, it's mostly the resonator and mufflers job.

I'm thinking of going 2.25'' header/downpipe, catless, x2 12'' resonators and 2.5'' piping to 2.5'' Apexi N1 muffler. Also want to see other people's input ITT.

Re: Anybody got straight pipes? What are your thoughts?

Yeah straight pipes are kind of retarded and annoying. Also I don't think they are going to pass emissions if you ever need to and they will probably attract a lot of police attention.

Re: Anybody got straight pipes? What are your thoughts?

My muffler is on a coupling so i can straight pipe it whenever I want (for clearance issues primarily).

It's retard loud. Louder than running open downpipe.

I have a catalytic converter and an 18" resonator, but at the same time on a 3" exhaust. I've driven it and been afraid a cop would have it towed away due to the pitch and overall db level it reaches when driving like that. It's just that loud.

My muffler cuts back at least 50% of the noise, so i just keep it on.

I don't recommend it.

Re: Anybody got straight pipes? What are your thoughts?

I have header to flex to 3" back to an Apexi WS2 and I can't wait to get a some vibrant resonators on this bad boy. People can hear me for miles. Oddly enough it is more quiet (inside the car) now than the fart can that the guy before me had on it. Its still to loud in the cabin for my tastes. I am hoping the resonator(s) will help.

Re: Anybody got straight pipes? What are your thoughts?

straight pipes are a loss of back pressure unless you have like a 500hp car. its like blowing air through a giant oil funnel opposed to a mcdonalds coke straw lol

Re: Anybody got straight pipes? What are your thoughts?

Don't feel too bad, my stock exhaust ends right where the axleback portion is supposed to attach! I'm eventually doing a completely custom system with proven parts. I say keep all the components but maybe change them for different models per se.

Re: Anybody got straight pipes? What are your thoughts?

From what I have read Hondas do better with back pressure and getting rid of the cat will actually cause you to loose power and it sounds like poo.

Invest in a good cat back that is my plan.

If you boost the car it will make more sense to remove the cat. that is also my plan.

Wrong. The idea of backpressure being "needed" is completely false.

Re: Anybody got straight pipes? What are your thoughts?

I think everybody is at a misunderstanding. Im keeping the cat and resonator, only running pipe instead of the muffler. Ill probably end up getting a megan catback but I just wanted some opinions on how it might sound

Nah, any amount of backpressure is a bad thing in a fuel injected car. However, when trying to make power, the size and length of the exhaust system is incredibly important, as exhaust scavenging and exhaust gas velocity has everything to do with how much power you make and where you make it in the RPM range.... Of course, getting your power down low will usually result in backpressure up high.

Re: Anybody got straight pipes? What are your thoughts?

Quote:
For instance, someone with a civic decides he's going to uprade his exhaust with a 3" diameter piping. Once it's installed the owner notices that he seems to have lost a good bit of power throughout the powerband. He makes the connections in the following manner: "My wider exhaust eliminated all backpressure but I lost power, therefore the motor must need some backpressure in order to make power." What he did not realize is that he killed off all his flow velocity by using such a ridiculously wide pipe. It would have been possible for him to achieve close to zero backpressure with a much narrower pipe - in that way he would not have lost all his flow velocity.
source - explanation of exhaust backpressure and exhaust velocity and its effect on engines

interesting and i learned the difference :P

seems like using stock sized pipes would keep the velocity the same while by eliminating the cat or muffler may reduce backpressure and allow for more flow without losing velocity? i guess i just partially understand the concept.

OP, if you want to see how loud it might be, unbolt the stock muffler at the axle and see how loud it is. this won't necessarily show what it would sound like, but it will be about the same loudness. the length of the exhaust system is important and should still have something from axle back, maybe pick up an ebay axle back system and use it. will be much louder and should have at least a little better sound (and quieter) than straight piped.

It'll sound like a farm tractor. If that's your bag, feel free.
Vtec kicks in, it'll sound like an ultralight airplane or a moped exhaust funneled through a kazoo.

Btw those little dudes in lab coats knew a thing or two about back pressure when they engineered these engines to have 500k reliability.
