97 Prelude won't start

I bought a 97 prelude about a month ago. Changed the timing belt, water pump, auto tensioner, starter, spark plugs, and some other stuff. Before I changed that stuff, the car had the check engine light because of knock sensor 1 no signal. Sometimes when I would go to start the car it wouldn't start, or it would start and run really crappy for a few seconds then the idle would go back up to normal. Other times it would start up just fine. Sometimes when it wouldn't start at all, I'd continue to try and it would eventually start up. Some other times I would clear the code, and re-try and it would start. I have checked to see if I am getting spark and fuel and I'm getting both. Now the car won't start at all. I have heard that the knock sensor won't cause a no start situation, but that's the only thing I can thing of that's causing it not to start. I just don't want to buy a new knock sensor for nothing and have the car still not start. Spark plug wires are in order, new plugs, fuel pressure is there, Knock sensor is making check engine light come on. Any Ideas???

Re: 97 Prelude won't start

your still getting the same cel that your got before you changed everything? this wouldnt cause it to not start at all i dont think but are you positive you got the timing right? and your EGR is cleaned as well as your IACV?

Re: 97 Prelude won't start

I'm sure I got the timing right. After we did the timing it started up just fine and runs perfect with lots of power. Still have to clean the EGR and the IACV, I'm gonna do that in the morning.

Oh and yes same CEL as before the timing. Im gonna jack up the car tomorrow so I can look at the knock sensor and check it out.

Re: 97 Prelude won't start

So today my cousins and I took out all 4 spark plugs and looked at the plugs and they had engine coolant on them, and the cylinders have coolant in them. Im gonna do a coolant bypass on it after looking it up. Or if I can just fix the problem (maybe a bad seal, or gasket)

Re: 97 Prelude won't start

I would think the only reason your cylinders would be full of coolant is because of a cracked head gasket. Is the coolant in your radiator oily, or is your oil a milky texture? If so, it means your oil and coolant are mixing because of a bad head gasket. If a head gasket cracks between a coolant channel and the cylinder, then you would get coolant in the cylinder. It would also lead to a loss in compression (air is now leaking into the cooling system instead of staying in the combustion chamber), and could cause your car to not run.

Re: 97 Prelude won't start

Nothing in the oil, nothing in the radiator fluid. And there is coolant in the tube that goes to the air filter. What are the chances the head gasket went bad between all 4 cylinders? If I do the bypass and it is still doing that, then I will do the head gasket. Ill post what I find tomorrow or the next day.

Re: 97 Prelude won't start

Coolant leaking into the intake system somewhere. I would check the IACV and FITV. Those are the only parts that have coolant running through them and attach directly to the intake system that I am aware of. The FITV has coolant passages that run through the throttle body. I don't think the IACV has much that runs through the intake manifold. I would start with the FITV.

Re: 97 Prelude won't start

The coolant bypass mod only lets coolant bypass the FITV, that's it. What did you think it does- Bypass the coolant so it doesn't go to the engine??

You positive its coolant in the intake and not oil??

Re: 97 Prelude won't start

The coolant bypass mod makes it so coolant doesn't run through the Fast idle valve, IACV, and the TB. It makes it so the coolant just goes to the block and skips those. And I will check it all out tomorrow.

Re: 97 Prelude won't start

The coolant runs through those to ensure the TB doesn't freeze shut in cold temperatures in morning start ups, and could actually improve performance by removing the heat running through the intake when the car is warmed up.

Oh and yes, there was coolant in the air filter tube.
