car turns off while driving?

Hey guys been having a problem with my 5th gen, it turns off while running at random moments. can be idling or driving it will turn off suddenly and all the dash lights turn ofd too. sometimes takes 20 seconds - 2mins before dashlights will come back on and it will start. has the type s engine, would this likely be ignition switch?

Just after possibilities to see what I can eliminate from the list

Re: car turns off while driving?

Most likely your ignition switch. What year is your Prelude?

Re: car turns off while driving?

It's ignition switch for sure. I had the same issue last year. There was a recal for I believe a relay or something that has to do with the ignition. I had that done and it stopped for about 2 months. The spring in the ignition switch gets loose and doesn't stay engaged, that's why it turns off. Change this and THIS ISSUE WILL GO AWAY.

Good luck

Re: car turns off while driving?

Im not 100% sure but I think Honda fixes it for free since it was recalled. But Im not sure because when I was looking to buy a Prelude a dealer showed me paperwork of the ignition switch being replaced and he said he had to pay for it.

When I took mine to Honda they fixed the Recall, but not the ignition switch. That apparently was a completely different thing. I forgot how much it was, because I bought a new immobilizer unit at the same time, but I believe to get a new one and for them to install is under $200? I think lol.

Re: car turns off while driving?

Yes because the springs I believe are internal. My spring was totally wacked. It would engage and some times not engage. So sometimes the car would stay running with they key out, and at times it would turn off with the key in. Dumbest issue ever to have, just buy a new one lol.

Re: car turns off while driving?

Cheers for the help guys. all going good now, just have to make a crappy wiring for the brake lights seems to be a break in the circuit somewhere, figured just doing a quick job with a new wore between the two ends should do the trick

Re: car turns off while driving?

Wow! I just had this happen to me the past 2 weeks! Was driving my '97 Lude about 70 mph on Hwy 20 in Arlington and my car made a quick sputter off/on but did not die. Was just getting into Granbury and the car just turned off (died!). What the??? I was able to safely pull to the shoulder. Sat there thinking why it could have happened... Decided to try to start - and she did. I checked my oil - it was pretty low... (typical for it to burn as a 5th gen and I have been keeping close tabs on it the past 2 yrs- but just kept putting it off due to the busy holidays. So I thought problem was solved.... Well last weekend the sputter off/on happened again on I-20 and then a couple days later it went died in town, but started right up. I have it scheduled to be looked at on Friday at Vandergriff. I will mention the ignition switch possibility to them.

Thanks for sharing!

Check for the ignition relay recall as well. As someone stated above its from 99-01 Ludes, they do that for free. If not then def purchase a new ignition switch, that's your issue.

Or you can take I30 everywhere lol mine shut down on I35 3 times before I got mine fixed.

Re: car turns off while driving?

Thanks for the advice! It is quite the experience when it shut down on the highway. At least I was not near the Dallas congestion when it happened.

Here are some links I found for '97 Prelude Ignition Switch recall:

Honda Prelude Recalls, Safety Notices, & Car Defects - Automobile Magazine

http://109.87.33.216/manuals/auto/Honda/83.pdf

Youtube video on how to replace:

Also a thread on PZ (5 Gen Ignition Switch Recall): 5th Gen Ignition Switch Recall

Hope I put the links in right...

Re: car turns off while driving?

I could of sworn the ignition recall was for 97-98 models only and got fixed after that?

Mine is 99 and Hinda said it needed to be serviced for that recall. They did for free
