99 Base Model Prelude

I'm looking into buying thus Prelude that's for sale locally, its a base model 99 with 200K miles, one owner car that the Carfax shows has been well cared for. The owner tells me that its the model with the J in the VIN # along with the amber clock. So apparently, this means the car was built with the good Japanese parts, and not the ****ty US parts. Has anyone ever heard this before?

Thank you,

Charlie

Re: 99 Base Model Prelude

The "J" just means the vehicle was assembled in Japan. That's it. The clock... First I've heard of it, probably irrelevant.

Re: 99 Base Model Prelude

looks good! just like mine, id say go for a test drive and see if you like it first. then check for any abnormal noises or feelings, rust, warning lights, tires and go from there. one owner and all maintenance done incl timing belt/water pump is a huge bonus

Re: 99 Base Model Prelude

I thought it looked like a good deal, I don't know what they are talking about, when they mentioned amber clock and J VIN? But the car looks clean, and a lot of maintance has been done to it.

Sorry to tell you, but that thing isn't special at all. Looks clean and everything, but I know there's a better deal out there.

Re: 99 Base Model Prelude

There aren't a lot of Preludes for sale in my area, and I don't care if its not special, I was just curious what the dealer selling the car was raving about. It's black, its a manual and it looks like its been well cared for, that's all I care about. It will make a good replacement for my Maxima.

He's trying to make it sound special. Lol…..That's what. Its him trying to butter it up and make it sound more special than it is. It's what used car salesmen do.

The only other Preludes that are in my area, are privately owned. I guess I might be able to trade someone car for car.

Re: 99 Base Model Prelude

The J in the VIN means the car was assembled in Japan. I would think that since it was assembled in Japan, it would contain Japanese parts. I am not aware of "any" Preludes being assembled in other countries but I could be mistaken. Sounds like the "dealer" is blowing smoke!

I would wonder if all other dealer stated info is true. A Carfax report will give you title, registration, and accident info with very limited maintenance info. If there is documentation for the maintenance and the car is very clean you could do worse for $3000 but the mileage is a bit high.

Good luck!

Re: 99 Base Model Prelude

If the dealer is telling the truth about records being available, make them show you. Check for rust underneath. If that's good to go and you have the cash, carry 24 $100 bills in one pocket, and however many you are willing to carry in your other.
Performance wise this car will kick a maxima's @$s. Cargo/ passengers, no way dude. Maxima has nifty cupholders, Preludes have stupid ones.

You want? Buy it!, dealers around me would be asking 5-8k for that car.

Would I buy it? Yep, in a second.

Re: 99 Base Model Prelude

As far as I know all the 5th gens have an amber clock. According to the honda service manual for the 5th gen all of them were built in Japan.

I used to sell cars and you can talk him down. he is selling that for $2999 that means he bought the car for $1000 to $1500. Just to give you an idea.

Also we are not all thieves

I would offer him $2000 at the most. also tell him you found one in better shape with less miles for less. most of the time they will sell at a discounted price after hearing that.

Lastly i bought mine with 119k on it for $2500

Re: 99 Base Model Prelude

I think the old, I found a car just like it with less miles and a cheaper price trick, only works if you plan to buy the car for cash. I think people keep missing the point that I have to finance this car.

Re: 99 Base Model Prelude

A lot of good recommendations so far - check for rust and any obvious excessive wear. If it was serviced at a Honda dealer - ask for the phone number and call them to see if they can confirm the records of maintenance. Many things can start needing to be replaced at 200,000 miles. Make sure the timing belt and water pump have been changed recently (it is not cheap!). I would also take it to a mechanic you know or a Honda dealership for a thorough check (Car Fax is about 80% accurate). Well worth the $75-$100.

Good Luck! Bought my '97 Lude new and now has over 265,000 miles. Love it!

Re: 99 Base Model Prelude

They told me that the timing belt had just been replaced. As far as the waterpump, I don't know. But its a question I'll ask. They don't seem too eager to sell this car, because it takes some times a day or two for them to get back to me.

Re: 99 Base Model Prelude

The ole day or two to get back with ya trick...that keeps you frothing to pay whatever it takes to get that car.

Typically vtec motors have oil leaks. If they have been corrected, great, if not, not a deal breaker unless it's bad.
Typically tires that fit these cars last 30-45k, depending on the type of driving.
Check the brake pedal pad for wear. Dealer may have added a new one. But when I buy a car I check peddle pad wear. Gas worn out, brake looks new...highway miles, sold.

Unfortunatly financing gives the dealer most of the cards. Most.. you can possibly get better tires if need be, definitly leaks fixed...agree lurchenstein?

Re: 99 Base Model Prelude

Lol that's the first time I've heard of the amber clock being proof of it being made from Japanese parts rather then "crappy US parts" All 97-01 models have that same exact clock. Salesman is either a load of crap or he doesn't know what he's talking about.
