5th Gen No Start

Hello, I have a base, 2000, 5 speed with 230,000 miles that I can't get to start and I can't figure out why. Last summer, it got to where it would die when I would try to let it idle. After a while that all cleared up, but I was getting 20 mpg at best. My dad and I did a compression test around September, and it hasn't really run since. I put it all back after the test, and it wouldn't start.

Sometimes, it would start and run like absolute crap (shuttering and sounding like it was running on 2 cylinders) for about 30 seconds to a minute and then clear up and run perfect. Then, other times, it would start and run perfect, then five minutes later, it may not start at all. I haven't gotten it to start in a couple of months. I've had it in two shops... one Honda dealer, and one small shop. The Honda dealer said that it "jumped time" and the other shop said that my distributor was bad. So far I've replaced the distributor, coil, main relay and the ignition switch.

I've heard that you're supposed to ground out the coil on the frame, body or something along those lines, but I didn't. Do you think that could have something to do with it?

Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Charles

I didn't ground it to anything. That's what I'm not sure about. Am I supposed to do that and if I don't, what could it mess up?

Re: 5th Gen No Start

I don't quite understand what the link has to do with my situation. It seems like something got fried or disconnected during the test. I forgot to mention, my car still gets fuel, but it's getting no spark at all. My CEL isn't on. I do know that the compression test was NOT accurate. It was saying about 85-90 on all 4 cylinders. When the car would start and run right, it was still crazy quick. I've driven about 5 H22 Preludes and this one runs about like the rest, so I know the compression test wasn't right. If it was that low, it either wouldn't run, or it'd run like crap.

Since you say the ignition switch has been replaced (recall I assume?), check the wire from the coil > distributor for security, then check (double check and triple check) your spark plug wire sequence. It's much easier than you'd think to inadvertently swap a wire around.

After that, double check your base timing (I assume you've got the OEM auto-tensioner) to see if the dealer was right.

Re: 5th Gen No Start

No, I thought the switch was bad, so I replaced it. It's not getting anything from the coil at all, and I've checked the plug wires several times. Everything is hooked up correct and everything is in good working order as far as I can tell, but I'm just not getting anything from the coil. Also, all of my plug wires are cut a certain length, so it's impossible to plug them into the wrong place (except plugging them wrong into the coil). But, again, I know that's not what the problem is. There is something going wrong before the coil.

Re: 5th Gen No Start

Bad coil perhaps? Got a spare to slave in for testing or a local shop that can test it?
