5th gen Engine removal/swap help and recommendations

Hello everyone, I was hoping to get some advised/help/recommendations for a 5th gen engine swap. 1998 Type-SH

Several years back my engine suddenly stopped running while I was on the freeway. I had my car towed to my friends shop where they told me I had an interference engine. (where your pistons hit your valves, caused from a bad timing belt) In a nut shell, my car as been on jacks for several years and im now looking to swap in a new-er H22. Before I get too into it, since I don't know exactly what im doing, I was wondering where I should start. I will be replacing my radiator as well due to a rust colored fluid from the radiator and the block.

This is what I have removed so far:
Battery
Hood
Intake
Front Bumper
Headlights

I was then going to drain the oil, coolant, and tranny fluid. My only issue is im not sure how long it will be till I get an engine to swap it with. Is it okay to leave the tranny dry for an extended period of time?

Also, I would like to know how I can better prepare myself for removing and swapping the engine. Where should I go from here? Anything I should look at or renew while the engine is out? Any comments or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I'm just hoping that the cause of your problems wasn't the faulty ignition switch. There is a recall for it, and one of the symptoms is the car intermittently shutting off while driving. Might be easier to pull the head and check the valves to see if they're bent. Once the head is off you can see the current condition of the tops of the pistons and cylinder walls to see if you really need to spend the money on an engine swap.

Download the FSM, and read about tearing apart and removing/installing the engine. It will help you through your adventure.

Thanks for the advice, I'm pretty sure my buddy looked at the valves but I'll check myself just in case.

What is the FSM and where do I find it?

factory service manual, its what mechanics use or the dealers. the most through and complete manual. you can find links here http://www.preludezone.com/general-t...e-manuals.html

BUT..if your doing a full rebuild you might find it very helpful to buy a hard copy, as what i did... 1997 Honda Prelude Factory Service Manual (Complete Volume): Honda Motor Company: Amazon.com: Books

and your going to want to do many things while going through your rebuild, two things to look into is a wire tuck and a manual belt tensioner. I rebuilt my H22a4 not to long ago, message me if you have any questions!

Re: 5th gen Engine removal/swap help and recommendations

Don't drain your fluids til you remove said part. If your car is out doors or indoors ya want a plastic liner under it.
You can build a bladder with clear poly and lanscape timbers or 2x4's. Wrap the poly over the 2x4 frame to create like a bowl. It's called a diaper in my line of work (road building).
Go to lowes, home depot etc and get several 5 gallon buckets from the paint section along with some sortof roll of disposable shop towels to sop up that $h!+ that misses the bucket and lands on your diaper.

Re: 5th gen Engine removal/swap help and recommendations

When the motor is out, steam clean the engine bay, decide if you want your a/c, cruise control or power sterring. Fix those ugly shock towers to look good again, spruce up any wires or cable you can, buy 10' of vacuum hose, some new belts for the pulleys you are keeping. By now you get the idea, right? Tidy up now to save mucho time once the motor is re-installed.
Lastly, take lots of pictures. Members love pictures.

Wow, thanks for all of the great advice. Unfortunately, this probably wont be the quickest process since I am currently a full time student and work full time, but I'll be sure to keep track of my progress and keep you all involved.

Re: 5th gen Engine removal/swap help and recommendations

Ok, cork the tailpipe and intake to keep critters out and set some mouse traps.
If you have the car out doors, cover it or keep it in the shade.
Drain the fuel tank too. You want fresh gas when you go to turn that key later. Leave the fuel line alone for now since bugs may decide to move in there.
