Help! 2nd gear grind

Hi guys

About 2 weeks ago I had my slave cylinder go out and the clutch pedal was stuck to the floor, in order for me to get it changed I had to drive it down the street to a shop without a clutch, when doing this I sort of pushed it into second gear while fiddling with the clutch and it grinded into second. After a successful slave cylinder change I noticed 2 things:

1. The clutch is on its way out because it is slipping in almost every gear.

2. Every time try putting the car into 2nd gear it grinds.

I have changed the transmission fluid using GM Synchro Mesh which didn't really do anything for the 2nd gear grind. I asked 2 different mechanics and both of them say it is a problem with the clutch and not the transmission but having owned a few preludes now I know that it could be a problem with the 2nd gear synchro. Now my question is: is it possible for the clutch to only cause grinding in 1 gear?

A few other things: If the car is not moving or moving really slow at low rpms there is no grind. When the car is off it slips right into gear with or without the clutch as usual. Lastly if the car is on and the clutch is not pressed, I push the shifter toward 2nd gear and it starts grinding unlike any other gear.

It's not designed to do that. By not depressing the clutch pedal you're inducing the grind.

Re: Help! 2nd gear grind

I had the same thing happen on my car. It acts the same way yours does. Clutch is brand new so It's gotta be the synchro, especially if it's only in 2nd. I'm dealing with it until I decide to upgrade my trans.

Mine grinds like that going into fifth. It started right after I put in a new master cylinder.

Thanks for the responses.

I was hoping it was just the clutch. Are you planning on replacing the transmission or just changing the 2nd gear synchro? And does anybody know how much extra work it would be to replace the synchro while the transmission is out for a clutch change?

Re: Help! 2nd gear grind

I'm planning on changing the whole transmission. For me it's going to be easier and cheaper and better for performance (currently have an accord trans in my prelude).

Do some research, there has to be writeups on replacing the synchro. Also, look into a manual for the prelude, particularly a hems manual. They show you how to do damn near everything your car should need.

Re: Help! 2nd gear grind

I think the problem is you didn't put the clutch pedal to the specifications, so it's grinding due to it.

You shouldn't be able to start the car without the clutched pushed in. Let alone shift gears without the clutch pushed in.

If you can rev match, and you're good at it, you can drive without the clutch in emergency situations like this.

But it seems OP didn't match it well enough and killed that synchro.

Easier to swap in a new transmission or send it out to be rebuilt.

Re: Help! 2nd gear grind

In the meantime, if you HAVE to drive it, double clutch to 2nd. My 5th grinds everytime cause the synchro is going out (and I don't wanna mushroom the gear and lose 5th and reverse :/ ) After 1st, shift to neutral, re-engage the clutch, then shift to 2nd.. it shouldn't grind.

Re: Help! 2nd gear grind

I've been avoiding 2nd gear as much as I can. While the transmission is out for the clutch change I am thinking of replacing the transmission. The only issue I have is buying a used trans that has the same issue... Also can I use my old atts unit with the new trans?

Re: Help! 2nd gear grind

That's exactly what the risk is of getting another used tranny. But the advantage is its alot easier to install, cuz you don't gotta tear apart the tranny to replace 2nd gear.

Yes, as long as you get another SH tranny, ATTS will bolt up fine.

Re: Help! 2nd gear grind

so I am probably going to go the route of just replacing the 2nd gear synchro and sleeve (if needed), since 2nd gear is the only one causing trouble, along with the clutch. I found a shop that is giving me a good price and have a good rep.

On another note, does anybody know how good these clutch kits are? Anybody have any experience with them?

Good luck and keep us posted, personally I avoid the shop at all costs because when you're stuck in the waiting room it might as well be a hospital waiting room. Freaking out the whoooolllee time.

Re: Help! 2nd gear grind

I'd personally stick to the tried and true Exedy/Daikin clutches.

Re: Help! 2nd gear grind

Just a heads up for anyone looking for an oem replacement clutch, amazon has exedy oem replacement kit for 123.99 which I think is a really good deal, with free shipping if you have prime.

I should have my car at the shop at the end of this week and I'll let you guys know how it goes. I spoke to the owner of the shop today, who also does the transmission work, turns out he went to the same school as me and has worked on his friend's prelude plenty of times. He usually works on civics and integras though.
