Aftermarket cam gear issue - need keys

holy ****.... I made a thread!

I ordered a pair of Crower cam gears awhile ago and just got around to installing them tonight during some major maintenance fun.

To my surprise, they did not come with the key for the end of the camshaft. Apparently this isn't as uncommon as I thought and have read that Honda # 90741-657-000 will fix my issue.

Does anyone else have experience with this kind of situation that can share what they did?

ive run into the same thing .. luckily had a set of b series cams / cam gears laying around and they have woodruff keys that are not part of the cam .. they fit perfect ..

Re: Aftermarket cam gear issue - need keys

I just checked HT and apparently they're a universal key used in all Honda's

Dug deeper into Google and found that it's apparently only listed on certain year 'ludes in the parts diagrams and listings.

# 90741-657-000 for future reference.

Glad to see ya back around man, hopefully me and Daryl can get your parts back to ya tomorrow or sometime soon....

Re: Aftermarket cam gear issue - need keys

Little update- using the above mentioned woodruff key has put me in this situation;

with the key installed, I have some space. I can either put it all the way into the gear or all the way into the cam. The key has a flat top and a curved bottom - so it is a bit of an illusion as to how much of the key really is in the cam itself. But it's not much since it's the curved portion - so not as much of the metal making a firm contact vs what is in the gear.

Should I leave it as is or remove the gear and place the key as far down as it can go into the camshaft? Either way - one of the two will have less key making contact and i'm unsure how that will turn out. The metal of the cam gear is softer than that of the camshaft - which is why I installed it more into the gear this round.

Re: Aftermarket cam gear issue - need keys

when i used them i installed them like you have .. you can get keys that arent cresent cut just tapered on one end ... parts stores should have them .. you may have to cut it to size .. but you will get a tighter fit ..

You had yours more into the gear vs the camshaft with that much of a gap difference?

They're an extremely tight fit as it is. I actually had to gently tap the gear onto the camshaft since I had installed the key into the gear first - and it wouldn't come out lol.

Would a key at a parts store be just as strong a metal and work under the extreme heat and wear conditions as the factory Honda ones?

Re: Aftermarket cam gear issue - need keys

when i installed mine i did so just like you did in the pic ... i figured that from honda thats all the surface honda needed to keep the cam gears in place . plus when you tighten the bolt on the end it holds a decent amount of tension .. my set up was fine and i was running a pretty high lift comp cam .. in 25 k i never had an issue ..
