Checking In.

It's been a month or two since my last check in. Last I posted, my H22 was misfiring due to a leaking head gasket. Since then, the problem has been addressed with a Cometic HG and since I was in there, got the head tanked, decked, and ground, I also picked up some ARP head studs, a KS tensioner, gates timing kit and all the applicable seals within. Ah, lets not forget the header I got for Xmas.

The past couple months have been a tedious (and expensive) journey. My hands hate me, given I spent like 3 weeks scrubbing accessories, transmissions, blocks, and heads, but goddamn do they look great! I have a rule about not putting dirty parts back on cars, and hopefully since I scrubbed all the 'lesser' components, it'll make the greater assembly look pretty after it's all said and done.

Tonight was productive. I got the engine/trans 4-pointed. I hope to hook up the harness and throw some fluids in it this weekend if time permits. Perhaps try to start it on Monday given it's a holiday and all.

/RK

Re: Checking In.

So, I've recently realized I'm very bad at taking before/after and progression pics, as I tend to forget to do the before and in-progress portion. I'm great at the after part. Regardless, here are some pics, some before, some during, but primarily after.

Imgur Album

More pics to come.

I've been thinking into the future lately. If everything goes well with this motor and I have no other immediate issues with the car, chances are I'll sell the WRX and keep the Honda. However, I'm never satisfied with stock so I'm looking into performance options for the Prelude. Perhaps you guys can assist me in making a decision. Options are as follows (in no particular order or preference):

1: Turbo H22A (closed deck block on hand, requires sleeves)
2: All motor H22A (again, sleeves + high compression slugs, think 13.5+:1 & ITB's)
3: K24 Swap

I haven't done a whole lot of research into the K swap, but from what I understand, it'd be an abject waste of time to build an all motor H22 when I could go K20/24 and make more power out of it stock.

If I had my way I'd go K, but I do have a budget (undetermined at this point) and at the moment I lack knowledge about it. Short of a K swap, all motor H22, then turbo. I realize it's much easier to make more power out of a turbo setup, but I've got a thing for all motor Hondas and to be perfectly honest, NA beats boost in reliability any day. In my eyes a 250HP NA H22 is more impressive than a 350HP boosted one. I estimate the price of a built NA H22 and boosted one to be similar.

Thoughts?

Re: Checking In.

well building na h22 is like endless money pit, you can get much more out of na K! Ks respond much more for simple bolt ons (and their transmissions gear rations are much better) and you can get 270hp out of them pretty easily while you have to do some magic tricks to get to that point with na H22

so Id say
1. na K swap
2. na H22
3. turbo H22

I dont like turbos that much myself either. AND you would get much more respect from K swap prelude

and when Im talking about K I usually mean K20a type r's, but of course k24 would be nice too if builded (it needs higher compression)

Re: Checking In.

Now correct me if I'm wrong, but the K24A2 (TSX) is the 24 bottom end with the 20/r head?

EDIT: TypeT, I've also got a thing for ITB's. I'd probably try to find some for the K.

Re: Checking In.

Update:

Over the weekend I serviced all the fluids, changed the oil filter and threw some new NGK's in it. It started almost immediately. Yay. My excitement was quickly extinguished by a knock/tapping noise coming from near #1/2 cylinders. It sounded like it was coming from the head, but I can't pin point it any further than that. It didn't fade away with RPM, it consistently followed it with no change in volume or severity. As the engine warmed up the noise slowly faded away. Once hitting normal operating temps, it seemed as though it totally went away. After idling for about 10-15min, it threw a CEL for a knock sensor problem. During the rebuild the existing knock sensor got demolished, and replaced (non-OEM) so I figured it was related to the noise that had disappeared, so I cleared it.

Enter the valve cover. I popped off the valve cover to double check the valve lash, and adjusted a few (no big adjustments). While I was in there I noticed the timing belt sort of slid back and forth on the cam gears a bit, so after struggling to remove the crank pulley for ~3hrs, I pulled the timing covers off and adjusted the KS tensioner a bit. Refusing to repeat what I had suffered through the evening before, I had the welder at work make me a pulley tool from a pic I pulled off of some RSX forum. I got this:

It's more than I ever expected, and jesus christ did it work amazingly. Best $4 I've ever spent (12pk of coke as payment).

I reassembled everything and cranked it up. The knock persists. Again, disappearing after warm up. After warm up, I took it out for the ever coveted 'maiden voyage'. Everything was smooth and fluid. On the way back, I opened it up a bit (~70% throttle) and got a CEL. Back at home I pulled the codes. It gave me a stored code of P0325 (Knock Sensor Circuit Malfunction) and a pending code of P0401 (EGR Flow Insufficient).

I see a couple of possibilities at the moment. I understand that a clogged/inoperative EGR system or valve could cause a knock, thus eliminating the new sensor. I highly doubt this because I excessively cleaned the intake manifold and EGR valve when the head was removed.

Possibility number two: Buying a cheap knock sensor bit me in the ass. And I have a random pending EGR code for reasons unknown to me.

I've also had an ABS light that bugs the **** out of me. Code 1-7 and 8-1 if I remember correctly. I've tried troubleshooting it as per the Helms, but I'm bad at wires.

Feel free to bounce some thoughts off me. The intermittent knock and CEL/ABS lights have me at a loss.

/RK

Re: Checking In.

1st. MAD props, you've done a hell of a job, and your lady looks sexy as all get out
2nd. Really really stupid question, did you pull that stupid little 7.5 amp fuse for the clock for 10 seconds to reset your ECU?
3rd. Chances are, timing belt slipping is were the real problem lies, if it's off a little bit you have an interference engine. and that's a no no. If you know you got it at the right tension, check your kainezspeed tensioner, its obviously not pulling its weight
4th. Valve spacing?

No, when resetting I just d/c the battery for a few mins.

Timing belt isn't slipping. I checked the timing last night, and belt tension is good.

If by valve spacing you mean cam/rocker spacing, I adjusted that within tolerances last night.

Re: Checking In.

I've been thinking. Someone mentioned lost motion assemblies. What are the chances the LMAs are loose when cold, thus allowing the VTEC rocker to slap against the cam until warm up, when they expand and do their job and retain the rocker against the cam?

Also, if it helps:

Cold start

After warmup:

My ABS codes are 17 (lt rear sensor short/ground) and 81 (ABS module). I figure the failing control unit is causing the other one, so I ordered one moments ago.

If it is your LMA, you should be able to tell if its 1 or 2, back or front. Keep us posted on what you find.
