Power steering whine fix

Hey guys, I recently did some work on the timing belt area of my Prelude (which requires removing the power steering lines and swinging the pump out of the way). When I put it all back together and refilled the fluid it had a horrible whine. I thought it was normal until all of the air was bled out of the system, but it didn't go away after a couple of weeks. I thought maybe the pump was going, but thought it was odd all of the sudden since I hadn't had any problems until then. However, there were a couple minor leaks. As it turns out, it was sucking air from those leaks. So no matter how much I tried to bleed the system, there would always be air inside.

After looking into the price of power steering pumps (cheapest was $175), I thought there had to be a better way. I found a couple rebuild kits at Oreilly's and Advance Auto, but neither of them had them available. So I just looked up the part numbers on Majestic Honda, and ordered several seals individually.

Here is what I ordered:

Diagram "P.S Pump"
91345-PY3-000(#17)
91347-P2A-003 (#18)
91348-P2A-003 (#19)
91349-P2A-003 (#20)
91347-P2A-003(#26)

Diagram "P.S. hoses/pipes"
91370-SV4-000 (#22)

If I were to do it again I would probably also order 14, 15, 16 on the first diagram also, just to be thorough. But mine was fine. When taking the pump apart be careful that everything stays lined up - it's nothing major if it doesn't, because I believe most of it only goes back together one way. But another word of caution is the pump itself has little tiny "blades" that are forced out with centrifugal force as the pump spins. The spinning won't make them fall out, but when you take it apart they can come out if you tip it sideways. Just don't lose anything and you'll be fine :)

Also, be sure when you refill the fluid you only use fluid specifically for Hondas. It really is important (can't tell you the science behind it, but do a search for it, and you'll see why).

In the end, I only spent about $30 on seals from the local Honda shop, and probably 30 minutes to replace everything. Good luck!

Re: Power steering whine fix

Or if you did it again, all you needed to disconnect was the PS pump from the bracket and move it outta the way. No need to disconnect ANY of the PS lines.

Re: Power steering whine fix

I have a leaking 91 that whines at first then stops. Oil everywhere like it sprays but It don't see the leak.
It could be the air thing like you said cb. Was going to study rebuilding that and my 97. The 97 don't whine... yet. I screenshot your part # list. Thanks.

Re: Power steering whine fix

Good stuff... thnx. My ps doesn't whine but the main pressure hose is leaking so I'll probably do a ps delete.

Re: Power steering whine fix

^^ I like my power steering.
When you guys delete do you change gearing in the rack or anything? Can it be done? What do you gain besides 16 c.i. of room?

Re: Power steering whine fix

you can always loop the lines and keep a bit of the power assist. but i think there is also a full delete.i think u definitely keep the rack and pinion tho, that stuff steers the car!

I'm old and fat and ...
(oximoron) happily married. I think I'll keep my power steering thank ya.
Besides the fluid dripping kills grass in the driveway cracks.

Re: Power steering whine fix

There are some benefits to removing it as well, really only one drawback..
- Doesnt waste power on the pesky ps pulley
- Cleans up the bay a bit
- Gives u room to work on stuff that is around it otherwise the ps pump would have been in the way, timing belt, or just spotting a leak
- Less leaks to worry about
- Less fluid to clean up under the hood
- Less fluid to buy
- Less stank under the hood
- You could sell it to someone that WANTS it
- You could sell it to someone who don't wants it
- Could scare the wife with it (leave it in the fridge)
- Turn it into an ashtray
- Turn it into a hat
- Personally I would yell at it when there is no one around

I cant seem to find myself alot of cons, just pros. Thats just my opinion, but I want it GONE !!! It's clean, it's perfectly operational, and soon it'll be for sale !
