exhaust problem

hey all, so i was at the mall today and when i came out and started my car it was really raspy like there was stuff rattling in the muffler, i looked around it and it doesnt have a hole or anything wrong with it but it sounded horrible, i drove back to base and i asked one of my friends at the gate if he heard something and he said it sounded normal so i guess when it warmed up it was fine.. i could smell my exhaust in the car tho and i had the windows up and all, just wondering if my exhaust is going bad or something, also if u guys have a suggestion for a new exhaust that sounds good id appreciate it, thanks everyone

Re: exhaust problem

Possible exhaust leak somewhere I would say, check under the car and make sure everything is still sealed like it should be. I noticed something similar with my exhaust and found a leak where the header goes from 4-2.

Re: exhaust problem

First check for exhaust leak and if that's fine the cat might be bad like mentioned. Also check to make sure there is no metal to metal contact from the heat shield or the metal above the entire exhaust

Re: exhaust problem

some times the bolts come lose you might just have a leak from there. drive with the windows down if you smell exhaust inside. driving cold is way better then driving dead.

Re: exhaust problem

Stick a rag over your tailpipe. If car tries to bog down a lot you don't have a massive leak if any.
If that don't tell ya anything turn the car off and inject a small amount of tranny fluid in the tb. Will make your exhaust smoke badly for a few minutes. You can check under the car for leaks while it's smoking.

Smell could be your tailpipe doesn't extend out far enough and a bit of exhaust backs under the car.
Rattling? I think previous comments cover that well.

Re: exhaust problem

One place to check for a leak is the downpipe hanger. It attaches to (i think) the bottom of the block where the downpipe straightens out just before the primary O2 sensor. I had that hanger break off (at the welds) on my header, and had the same symptoms.

Re: exhaust problem

When you get your car inspected most inspectors i know use the rag trick. If car bogs down it passes that part. You apparently have a small leak that closes when the warm metal expands.

Re: exhaust problem

first - your writing is pretty horrible to read. have you heard about dots?

second - how we should know what sounds good in your ear? listen some sound clips

n1-style mufflers are loud
mufflers like Vibrant Performance ::. are more quiet

Re: exhaust problem

There's a quiz at the end of this thread. You must be cognizant with participles and adverbs.

Greddy. You loud? Quiet? Somewhere in between? What? We have no idea here what you have or what you like. I guess a bit more description would go a long ways.

Re: exhaust problem

Greddy, Thrush or hush Thrush.
Thrush mufflers sound vintage. That may not suit a 5th. But on 1st -3rd they sound like an old japanese car.

Re: exhaust problem

If you have an N1 style... just go with anything off ebay. Or you could at least buy one that's good quality and order from Vibrant. You need to keep in mind that stainless steel pipe needs a stainless steel muffler, and non stainless steel needs a non stainless muffler. Welding two different metals together is very difficult for a shop to do and if they're able to do it, will cost you more in the end.
