Heating fan not kicking on but does when ac is on

I did a radiator flush and bleed the system. I waited for the heating fan to kick on and it never did. Been driving car for past month with no issues, heats up fine and temp gauge stays steady. Today I lifted hood and let car run for a long time and yet the fan never kicks on. Push the ac button and both fans work great. Is there a reason why when car heats up that fan never seems to come on ? Sorry if this has been covered but couldn't really find and answer when I searched.
Car is 98 base, with no real mods....also there is a new thermostat and radiator cap

Re: Heating fan not kicking on but does when ac is on

If its not overheating, what are you worried about??

But no- winter time, in Chicago, I'm assuming it doesn't get above, 50 degrees??
The rad fan(s) only come on when the engine (coolant) is getting too hot and needs to cool down, so the fans pull the heat from between the fins of the rad.

Also as the car is moving, air is naturally moving thru the radiator, cooling it down. The fans are really only needed when the car is sitting still.

Just making sure that its not something that may go out soon...last thing I need is a bigger problem down the road, especially in winter

Yeah you will be fine especially during winter. When tempatures start getting in the 90's and up the fan should turn on.

I recently changed my radiator and thermostat and I noticed the same thing. I just figured since its winter, the car won't get to the point where it needs the fans

Re: Heating fan not kicking on but does when ac is on

The fans automatically turn on when you activate the A/C. You know they work. There are 2 different ECT switches (engine coolant temp). One provides information to your ECU, the other directly controls the fans. The switches are both located on the passenger side of the car and identical in appearance. Now, if i remember correctly, the fan switch is the one that mounts to the thermostat housing and the one for the ECU mounts under the distributor adjacent to the 1-pin coolant temp indicator connector. I may have them backwards.

Testing:

-Remove the connector from the fan switch.
-Turn key forward (don't start).
-Place a jumper in the female end of the connector you removed.

If the fans turn on (we know they work from the A/C test), you know the wiring is operational which would also indicate a faulty switch.

Given your car isn't overheating or causing any real problems at this point, I wouldn't concern myself with it mostly because you can't verify if it's even reaching temps to justify the fans energizing. At least this way you have the information on how to test it if problems arise in the future.
