5th gen SH with Drivers side cv axle stuck..

Hey guys i'm posting this for a friend. They have a 97 honda prelude SH (manual trans) and they are tryin to replace the driver's side cv axle... they ended up pulling the majority of the axle out and the stub part is stuck in there by the atts unit (spelling?) and we have tried everything trying to get it out. it moves in and out but it seems like the little c ring is not collapsing to release it out of the piece. I'm use to the base model preludes with the intermediate shaft that goes into the transmission. ANYWAYS they have tried everything from using a slide hammer and chain on it to pull it out... i have a pry bar and a big ass hammer trying to pound it out but there is hardly any room in there to get it in there.. Even tried moving the wheel around to hit it in different spots... ANY suggestions on how to get it out? They have been trying for 2-3 days to get it out. MUCH APPRECIATED IN ADVANCE!

Re: 5th gen SH with Drivers side cv axle stuck..

you said moving the wheel around to different spots, did you remove the steering knuckle? the lower ball joint has to come out of the control arm to get the axles out. once the lower ball joint is out, you can swing the steering knuckle out a little bit, the upper has a lot more range of movement.

you will also have to disconnect the strut tower from the lower control arm. once those are out of the way (you also have to remove the nut from the wheel side of the axle, 36mm impact socket from auto parts store)

once all of that is out of the way, you take a flat pry bar, tap between the axle and tranny (atts) gently with a hammer, and it should just pop out. it was one of the easiest things i have done on my lude (getting the ball joints out of the lower control arm was probably the hardest.)

They have the whole knuckle off. I guess I was moving the passenger side wheel in order to move the drivers side stub piece. Even with the knuckle and everything off there is no room other than below the stub part between the atts unit and the cv housing piece.. we used a huge pry bar and a huge sludge hammer and still nothing. Banged on it for close to 30 minutes nonstop too. it will click back and forth moving it in and out but it will not budge... Is there an easier way to get the c clip inside to collapse?

i guess a lot of people have issues with that, and i found a good picture on preludeonline that demonstrates how they got it out. prying on the side then having a bar going to the top of it and hit it.

Looks right try banging it out hit it towards the way you want to get it out while sticking a crow bar behind it to push it out just be-careful not to band anything else.

Ya that's where I've been hitting it with a pry bar... no other place even possible to hit it. I'll let them know to try a gear puller. thanks for the suggestions! if you have pics too that'd be helpful

When I did it in my integra, the clip got caught up inside the housing and got stuck. Instead of shrinking, it got pulled out of the groove. Took me awhile, but I didn't it by hammering screwdrivers/punches in between the axle and housing and it eventually came out. Just keep prying at it.

Lol had the same problem. Hit the axle from the top of the motor and use a pry bar at the same time. Probably took me 3 hours to get out, your not the only one that's had problems
