Icon1 BLACK SMOKE HELP!!!

My 01 prelude base has black smoke coming out of exhaust when I rev it as its idled. I recently put dc header and a straight pipe exhaust removing the cat. My question is that bad? And also light keeps.coming on for the o2 sensor is there a way I can remove it permanetly?

Re: BLACK SMOKE HELP!!!

Your running rich because you have no cat. The o2 code is because you have no cat. Your gaining nothing by removing the cat, your actually loosing power and killing your fuel economy. Install a high flow cat and call it a day.

Re: BLACK SMOKE HELP!!!

You probly lost a bit of back pressure with that mod. Black smoke could be a number of things, i would go with what basicConcept said and put a cat on it, unless you have like a 400hp car straight pipes are just cop magnets

Re: BLACK SMOKE HELP!!!

No cat is definitely what's causing it. Without a proper tune, a cat delete generally isn't a huge benefit. If you want your cat deleted and your o2 sensor bypassed, you'll need your car tuned or else it'll run rich and you'll whole rear bumper will soon be covered in soot. You'll also see very poor gas milage.

Re: BLACK SMOKE HELP!!!

Was any smoke coming out prior to the cat delete? It won't damage anything but like it was mentioned it will run rich there for fuel economy will decrease. A lot of ppl do cat deletes and you won't benefit many hp really ur best bet is replacing that header with a better one. You live not to far away from me if u ever want to meet up by the way PM or something

Re: BLACK SMOKE HELP!!!

I also have black soot spitting out when I hit higher RPMs. I needed to use an O2 spacer to pass emissions and wanted to know what else could be causing the black soot besides massive carbon build up? or is it just that?

Re: BLACK SMOKE HELP!!!

Those guys in lab coats engineered these cars around the cat. You can't just start removing and adding stuff and expect an upgrade in performance. Preludes are test projects for future production cars. We are the testers.
If you want to change stuff you have to theoretically put on a lab coat and study the way to gain vs what is lost due to all of the electronics that push and pull against each other.
If you could remove all the gadgets and sniffers, sure you could get mopar style get up and go by adding a 4 barrel carberator. But you wouldn't need to. They'd already be 600hp due to the lack of restrictions but they'd only last 20k miles.

things what causes you to fail emissions:
- ignition parts poor condition
- dirty injectors or/and egr
- clogged/defunctional o2 sensor or/and cat
- poor valve seals/piston rings
- intakes air/exhaust leaks

Re: BLACK SMOKE HELP!!!

Very helpful tips guys thanks!. I did research that no cat does lose power, but after I installed the straight pipe. The header is brand new though. Ill go with grabbing a high flow cat, any reccomendations where to get a good high flow?
