HELP! 2001 lude SH intermittent shuts down while driving.

Hello all, I have a 2001 Prelude SH (mild mods; intake headers, exhaust) with 137K miles on it. I recently cleaned EGR ports and valve. It has shut down on me 2 times while driving it within the last week (one time when I came to a stop had it neutral and the other when I was in gear going about 30 mph), I do notice the green key light flashing once it shuts off and key is still in ignition and all the power (head and dash lights, stereo stays on) No engine code (except ATTS code is on) I have cranked it a few times immediately after and it dies. I have to wait maybe 5 minutes before it will crank and start and then I can drive off. I know there was a recall on ignition switch for 97 -through 99 ludes but I donít see the 2001 models in this recall. It runs and idles smooth but has scare the **** out of me the when shut down. Any thought on what it could be? I have been searching on the forum and all over the web and everyone states it could be the ignition switch or main relay but its not a lude that was part of recal years. I am so confused.

PGM-FI relay or ignition switch. Both notoriously problematic.

PGM-FI relay is a common Honda thing, no recall.

Check on the ignition replacement. Ie has yours been done. The dealer will know.
There was a recall on 5th gens where the ignition wiring would become corrupted due to design flaws.

Re: HELP! 2001 lude SH intermittent shuts down while driving.

I did order the ignition switch from rockauto for 22.00 (cheapest I could find) and should receive it by Friday and I will update you guys. I've read in forums that normally the Main Relay does not shut your car down while driving.. but I will take relay apart and make sure all connections are good. Is this correct?

Thanks!

Re: HELP! 2001 lude SH intermittent shuts down while driving.

That's cockamamie. As soon as it warms up enough to break the solder's contact, it shuts down. Once it cools off, it works.

Do you have an after market alarm system installed? my car had ignition switch issues but the switch itself was fine, the alarm system had its ownn ignition bypasss installed that had failed.

Re: HELP! 2001 lude SH intermittent shuts down while driving.

I didn't install the viper alarm myself... took to an authorized viper dealer. I also soldered the joints on Main relay last night and tomorrow I plan on installing the new ignition switch. The strange thing is the relay looked good but I hear that sometimes you cant see the cracks in the soldered joints... So I went ahead and hit them all with solder .

Re: HELP! 2001 lude SH intermittent shuts down while driving.

Day 2 driving lude after switch replacement and so far so good. I took new and old ignition switches appart to see the damage of the old switch and compare... It looks as if I could clean old one, put back in and it will work. New switch is a complete different design inside... All copper and less plastic.

I only took pics of old switch.

Re: HELP! 2001 lude SH intermittent shuts down while driving.

Sorry for bumping an old thread.

When replacing the ignition switch, do the keys need to be reprogrammed to work with the immobilizer?

I found this post: a little help, car stays running
and it seems like it's a direct replacement.

Thanks.
