Hi new to PZ and the prelude, have some questions.

Hey guys,

New Honda Prelude owner from San Antonio. Used to drive a '94 jeep wrangler so I'm very excited to be driving a prelude. I just purchased myself a '01 Prelude, auto trans, with 106k miles on it and super clean. I know the basics when it comes to maintaining a vehicle, but I'm not to handy when it comes to DIY stuff. Anyhoo, I just have some general questions that, if possible, could be answered I would really appreciate it!

1. I realize that the Prelude says it "requires" premium unleaded. Is this something to completely abide by? I foolishly filled up half a tank with reg. unleaded this morning.

2. I've read that the 5th gen auto trans from the years 97-98 had a lot of failures, but from 99-01 Honda did some minor upgrades to the auto trans and it prevents failing for the most part. Taking into consideration my mileage, should I be ok?

3. I'm taking my lude to my mechanic to have a general check-up tomorrow before I drive back to san antonio(from houston). What are big ticket items I should make sure are A-OK. Trans? Brakes? Fluids?

*I need this car for the rest of college and into my grad studies and beyond so any help and tips would be appreciated*

Re: Hi new to PZ and the prelude, have some questions.

Fill up with the highest octane you have... running on low octane gasoline can cause the motor to "knock" due to it's higher compression vs most other normal 4 cylinders.

Auto transmissions are iffy. It could go any day - or last another 30k+. If it feels smooth - you have time to start saving for a 5spd swap.

Make sure all fluids are fresh, timing belt and water pump have been replaced, and be sure there are no CEL's.

Besides any of that, just typical maintenance.

Don't beat on the car using the manual shifting option

If you get water in your trunk or under the rear seat - replace your tail light seals and clean your drain tubes for the sunroof

Make sure your brakes are in good condition.

Check your oil level WEEKLY - these cars have a bad habit of burning oil depending on how they were previously maintained.

There are a ton of other maintenance things, but nothing you need to worry about until you start having some sort of issue.

Re: Hi new to PZ and the prelude, have some questions.

Unfortunately, I got a CEL today:/ took it straight to autozone for the free odb2 test and it came up as a po133. Which is a o2 sensor issue. Is this bad news bears from here on out? From what I've read I just need to replace this part and it should do the trick.

Re: Hi new to PZ and the prelude, have some questions.

Welcome! Definitely use higher octane gas. Also I would be easy on the trans some members have no problem with the tranny (yet) but many encounter failing transmissions. Like mentioned a 5 speed swap and your good for much much longer than rebuilding the auto transmission. I'm in the same boat as you need myc ar to run good all throughout college. It's a fun car and good on gas and great body style No o2 sensor is a fast and easy fix. I would replace it with an NGK o2 sensor which is the oem supplier for O2 sensor, spark plugs, and spark plug wires. Can't remember if that is the o2 sensor before the catalytic converter or after. Was it bank 1 or bank 2? I would do it yourself sir.

Re: Hi new to PZ and the prelude, have some questions.

Bank 1 would be before the cat. Most likely it just fouled over from using regular gas. I'm sure you could just clean it off and it would be fine. But replace it if you need to.

Re: Hi new to PZ and the prelude, have some questions.

O2 sensor fail is part of routine maintenance. You may encounter idle bounce. That's typical. There's a final idle thread that explains how to d.i.y.
Auto tranny's fail over time in these cars. I don't know if that's from being used as an F1 style or just lousy engineering. I've heard of some 99-01 lasting 200k+. Otheres broke at 80k. Some Accord autos fail too.
The posts above pretty much cover the biggy's. But a car thats more than 10 years old will need work at times. Even a Honda. If you drive it like a race car it'll break more often. Buy good gas like BP or V-power and your innerds wills stay cleaner than shotz or the goose etc.
Congratulations on purchasing a prelude.

Re: Hi new to PZ and the prelude, have some questions.

Welcome to the site! Be sure to check out BB Alliance TB on Facebook.... It's a prelude community based out of your area.
1. Yes, there's a reason it says Premium in numerous places... Abide by it.
2. You should be fine at 106K
3. Before going on a road trip, always check tire pressure, fluid levels, oil level(and life)

Ludes are great cars for going to college in. Lots of fun, even with the auto transmission. Only bad thing about them is the lack of passenger space and relatively small cargo space. Other than that, it's a great car!! Where do you go to school at and what are you studying?

basic maintenance

- new spark plugs & wires
- new distributor cap & rotor
- new air/fuel filters
- clean injectors/iacv/egr/fitv
- change all the fluids (including oil change + new oil filter)
- adjust valves and ignition

check o2 sensors, check exhaust that it doesnt leak, check suspension and brake parts are they wear out, check timing belt-things (are they replaced ever, water pump should be replaced everytime you change timing belt.. I play safe and replace them every 8 years/50k miles)
