Icon9 Police Problem....

I was just pulled over for my exhaust and the cops said that it was a "modified" exhaust and that it's supposed to be stock just like how it came off the showroom. Now I have a fix it ticket that I have to get signed off by a police officer. They said after that, I should receive something from the DMV? Anyone know what that would be??

Also, I have a silencer that I used to have on it. Can I just attach it back on and have an officer check it out? I don't think my dad has the stock exhaust anymore...

Re: Police Problem....

Damn, I'm from san Jose too and I got pulled over a month ago for having a "loud, but not too loud" exhaust. Luckily I only got a warning.
Imo my aftermarket exhaust is actually pretty quiet compared to the fart cans that roam around here.

Lemme know how your fix it ticket goes.

Re: Police Problem....

It sux when police start pulling you over for exhaust pipe looks, meanwhile you're stting on the side of the road and have to ask the officer to speak up when a bunch of motorcycles go by.
Maybe in your town harassing exhaust violations means there's no armed robbery or murders to keep 'em busy. In my view that's a good thing.

Re: Police Problem....

I've never even heard of a fix-it ticket lol
ca must be really strict, over here cops don't care..

But I did get stopped several times for tint/tint license plate and 12k blue HID'S on my eclipse;
but that was in pennsauken/merchantville where the white people are at
never got a ticket in camden..

Re: Police Problem....

Ticket in Camden? I'd imagine not, aren't you guys firing your entire police force?

As for the ticket, each state and town are going to have their own law/pet peeves. I'd
call the station the cop was from and ask for clarification on which law it was and what would be acceptable.

You could also put the silencer on and give it a try.

Re: Police Problem....

I got one of those before in the state of Florida I got a ticket for the same thing and to even get a cop to examine it you have to pay a fee which is stupid... So I just payed it because it was a waste of time of my life so I just ending up paying and left my exhaust on and it only discounts the ticket here in florida

Re: Police Problem....

It's a nice city to live in, but there's always a bunch of ricers rolling around who ruin it for those who actually want performance out of their cars like me..

UPDATE: I did 2-3 hours of straight research about this so-called "violation". If you get pulled over and written up for a "modified exhaust", you can take this ticket and call (800) 622-7733 to schedule an appointment to test how loud your car is and if it's under 95dB then you get a neat little sticker stating that your exhaust is under the maximum dB and not loud enough to be given a ticket. HOWEVER, I've read multiple cases where after someone who showed a cop their sticker/certificate, they STILL wrote them up for a "modified exhaust". And the officer who pulled me over said that ANY aftermarket item attached to a car is illegal?! I guess we're all driving illegal vehicles guys THOUGHTS?!

Re: Police Problem....

Depends on how strict they want to be with the law. Buy an Apex`i WS2. I've never been hassled about it in the two years that I've had the exhaust on my car.

Re: Police Problem....

I'm assuming you were revving your car up and they pulled you over. Cops don't have a say in what is a "modified exhaust" and what is not unless they see the whole system, for all they know it's just a muffler. The only reasonable grounds they could have is excessive noise or they suspect you won't pass emissions. Had a pretty loud muffler on my lude and never been pulled over because I control my throttle. No matter how loud it is, you can always keep it quiet.

Re: Police Problem....

Phantom, would I have to get the full exhaust system, or would just the muffler suffice?

Probably just the muffler. Though you may need to add another resonator inline to get it under control.

Re: Police Problem....

What if I already have two? My dad said I have a HKS exhaust. He said he forgot which specifically but pretty sure its HKS but it's pretty damn loud. Not ricer status, but it was loud enough to get these cops' attention.. (I got this car from my dad 1 month ago, still learning more)

Re: Police Problem....

As everyone knows, Cali has THE strictest laws on car mods, emissions-related mods specifically, like the exhaust. Fuking tree-huggers

I had a similar fix-it ticket for my exhaust about a year ago. He gave me a mandatory court date so I could show him I fixed it, I went to court, and the cop simply asked me if I fixed it. He didn't even go out and look at my car, he prolly didn't have the time to do it.

Even IF the cop does come out to look at your car, you think he's gonna get on his hands and knees to look under the car and look at the cat-back piping??

I then proceeded to put my straight-thru muffler back on as soon as I got home from court

F the police. I got a "aplified" exhaust because I was merging onto the interstate and didnt feel like merging at 40 mph so i just drove normal and i guess its "WAYYY! to loud" state trooper quote. got a apexi n1 and the ppl who owned it before me welded the back of my can off so its a vibrating fart can but i think it sounds badass . Sucks they need to see it fixed they had my brother do that on his 96 GSR and he just thru the stock on went to court house came back home and put it right back on lol they just wanna harrass you for having a nice car

LOL @ camden. Prettttttyyy sure they have much, much bigger problems to deal with than "modified exhaust". Such as being one of the most dangerous cities in America

Re: Police Problem....

Ha!
I got pulled over in SD one day... cop gave me a ticket for loud exhaust... was roaming around another part of SD the next day, another cop got me for the same thing. I had two tickets for the same damn thing but in different counties.
I went to that Db test thing... I was at like 138 Db's Hahahah!
I just installed the stock muffler and had a cop sign off my tickets and done!

Re: Police Problem....

138 db is ridiculous. thats almost a gunshot. But idk how that silencer will do ya it kinda depends on what twokexlv said. Dude didnt even come to take the time to look at it. He might just come out see your exhaust can and just assume you didnt do anything because of your can. I think it depends on how lucky you get cops are assholes haha or you can simply tell him your car is 13 years old and you can't find a stock exhaust so this silencer is the best I can do . Not saying you can't find a stock one but how would the cop know

Exactly. I'd get my hands on a stock muffler and install it, then remove it again :P

I live in the SF bay area and I've never had a problem with my Greddy exhaust. I've even had a cop ask me to rev it up and he said it sounded great! :D As far as CA emissions goes as long as you have a cat, they don't care what you have behind it. I thought the laws were the same way. Guess not

I live in VA and most cops arent to cool out here i just got lucky but i have stock exhaust so its not really a cop magnet. But being red and low doesnt help either. I heard some cops in cali look inside of motor bays for illegal mods. That true?

Yessir, before I was pulled over, I passed someone in cuffs and their car hood was popped open. It looked like a 240sx. There were 3 cop cars on that guy and one of em took their time to peel out and get me... They do a lot of car profiling..
