Looked at a 5th Gen

Okay so I finally got a hold of the guy with a 5th gen that I've been looking at for a while.

It's a 2001 SE with an auto transmission. Has something like 260,000 km on the body and the guy re-torqued the head which I think mean re-built (all new cams, valves, etc....). No mods besides the custom aluminum rims, DC cat-back exhaust, and an aftermarket intake.

As far as the head re-build (?), I asked if he replaced the piston rings and bearings and he said they were fine. He got a new timing belt and a knock sensor. Says the car only had fully synthetic oil it's whole life. He also got a new belt tension-er and that's about as much as I can remember. He also got the car re-painted last summer and made sure there wasn't any rust development. No rust can be seen. The bumper needs new clips after he hit the ditch and most broke off leaving it sagging really bad which I assume is like a $50 fix at a body shop. Body has a few dings that I might be able to pop out my self.

I didn't have a chance to test drive due to the dead battery because it's been sitting in the cold for 3 months so I can't tell if the transmission is slipping or if there are any other issues. As it sits right now, it looks fine, I'm a bit worried about the engine and how much good the re-torquing did.

I also asked him for any receipts on the work done to the car so when I get those and take a test drive I will decide if I want it.

Some questions I have:

-What to look for in the car and on the test drive?
-Is Re-torque the same as Re-build? I think he just refers to it as Re-torque.
-Common 2001 SE Auto problems?
-Pricing based on what I told you?

Re: Looked at a 5th Gen

dont buy auto!!

"I asked if he replaced the piston rings and bearings and he said they were fine."

if he hasnt replaced them ever, you probably have to do it
AND if he hasnt replaced water pump and 2 tensioners and auto tensioner dont buy a car which timing belt job has been done in such half ass way

and look receipts, if he hasnt something on paper, thats the sign that he hasnt done that thing

and for test drive:

check engine for oil leaks
check if theres rust anywhere (rear fenders, hood, trunk, sunroof area)
try to hear engines/suspensions sounds while driving

Re: Looked at a 5th Gen

Well he replaced A tentioner, I'm not sure which one. He's a mechanic so he does everything himself. I'll ask when the piston rings were last replaced and I'll have a look at the receipts. I doubt he'll try to screw me with this car because we're neighbors, but it doesn't hurt to be cautious.

No? I'm pretty sure that the auto failure does not condemn all auto 5th gens. It's a common problem, but it doesn't happen to every car. I also know not to be a naive idiot so of course I'm prepared for the worst. If I do end up getting this car I probably won't sell due to the high mileage on the body. I'll have to stick with it and if the auto does fail, then 5spd swap it is.

Re: Looked at a 5th Gen

From what I've read the 5th gen only really fail from the '97-'98 years. '99-'01 they made upgrades to fix em.

99-01 had some fixes which made them less likely to fail, but they still do and I'm kind of pissed of that they never issued a re-call on the transmission, but I guess it would be an expensive free fix for Honda to dish out so they just said "oh well, let them eat cake."

chaging the transmission wont help you that much when the whole transmission is designed wrong

but they won't because there is no recall. if you can find a good deal on a 5 speed, you will be saving yourself a huge headache.

how they could fix it when the replacement part is as bad as which it replaces?

that transmission isnt designed to handle the power what that engine makes

I can't find a decent 5spd which is why I'm looking at this auto. I'd rather have a manual, but can't find a good one.

just take your damn time.......

So much more of a pain in the arse to buy an auto and convert it to 5 speed...

find a nice clean 5 speed , Auto Preludes SUCK

There are so many 5 speed Preludes out there you eventually will find one in good shape. even if you have to drive a bit to get one....still better than having to do a swap to an auto IMO.

only way id bother doin a 5 speed swap to an auto is if it was a perfect 10/10 with super low miles or something..

If you get an rsx, don't post a video saying how much better it is than a prelude then argue with makdade.
That was a fun thread while it lasted.

Re: Looked at a 5th Gen

i was looking at a few RSX-S cars around here before i got my lude. first time i had ever even heard of vtec, and i had definately never heard of a prelude. after driving a few of them, i really liked them, but the prelude was very similar for MUCH less money.

and i put RSX s rims on my lude first thing i got it :P

RSX cars are a bit more luxurious and are a lot newer. I like their interior better than prelude, however I like 5th gens exterior design better.

Re: Looked at a 5th Gen

definately have bigger seats. thats the only thing i don't like about my lude. the seats aren't tall or wide enough for somebody who is 6'4" and 240 lbs. but the lude feels smaller and quicker when driving so it is more fun.

still you should get a lude :P rsx really does look like a fat prelude with a more pointy front. and with a 5th gen, anything that goes wrong is usually easy to fix.

I don't know, right now it's between a Manual RSX or an Auto 5th gen. Manual RSX sure sounds more attractive.

Re: Looked at a 5th Gen

there was a decent looking blue lude on autotrader.ca, but it had a head unit with a ps2 hooked up to it and cost $6000. only had 90,000 km (like 56k miles) seemed almost too good to be true, but that is a lot to pay for a prelude. IMO

Re: Looked at a 5th Gen

We use Kijiji.ca for cars. Craigslist is not very popular, I don't know what eBay is doing with their life, and Auto-trader.com is mostly Stealership cars. No decent 5spd preludes around that I can afford or trust.
