Swapping My Gearbox's 5th gear

I have a 1997 SH and the input shaft bearing is on its way out. I want to replace the transmission. I was thinking to help with the poor fuel economy that i could swap the 5th gear for one off the honda accord. It would drop my cruising rpm to 3.2k instead of 4k. Possible? I know that to do this the input and output shafts of both gearboxes need to be exactly the same, the gears need to have clearance in the housing itself and the input and output shafts needs to be the exact same distance apart. I do not want to take the atts out.

Is this possible? Anyone tried it? If you have tried it will it make the atts computer freak out?

Re: Swapping My Gearbox's 5th gear

The computer shouldn't care, it just sees that the car is moving. I don't know what you mean by poor fuel economy, my 99 gets 22 city (with me dogging on it a little bit everyday) and about 31-33 on the highway (with cruise and A/C on, subwoofer bumping, and loaded down with my fatass and 300 more pounds of shyt). I'd say those are pretty good numbers for a car that isn't supposed to get more than the EPA estimate of 25 Highway.

Re: Swapping My Gearbox's 5th gear

well that's much better mileage than I get. I've never gotten any better than 28.5 mpg from the car. the reason I wonder if the atts will freak out is that the computer calculates what gear your in so it knows how much torque is coming out of the transmission.

I know the base an sh box just has a different housing. All the gears are the same. Do you recall which transmission code the gears were pulled from?
