SRS light / install airbag

the past owner of my prelude was in a front end collision at some point in the car's life. a lot of the front end is from a red car, and the rest is my silver prelude. since i purchased it, the SRS light was on, and when i was buying, i looked up in the glove box and saw that the passenger airbag wasn't plugged in. so i thought, no big deal, and just havent addressed the issue till now

so i decided to change the color of my built in clock. and when i removed that, i pulled the passenger airbag off to inspect it. it looks brand new, and the cloth bag is neatly rolled up in front of a big cylinder thing. i want to install it into the system, hoping that that will fix the SRS light on the dash.

where should i start? i am terrified of it going off while i plug it in. i have gathered from research that if i unplug the battery for at least 3 minutes, i can plug the airbag in. but what happens when i reconnect the battery? since the SRS light is on, i am afraid the airbag will pop because it sees the crash code. is there a simple way to reset the computer? i tried to find the SRS computer using guides for civics or accords, because i couldn't find one for the prelude. just got a new chilton's shop manual for my prelude. there might be something in there about it.

anybody who has ever dealt with this, or has knowledge of the system, i would appreciate your input. i want to figure this out.

Re: SRS light / install airbag

alright. i found the pages in the manual. if i disconnect the battery for 3 minutes, i will be alright to plug it in. the codes stored in the computer can be cleared once i plug the battery back in using the procedure of locating the yellow 2 pin connector in the drivers footwell, turning the ignition off for 10 seconds, bridging the connector's pins, turn the ignition on, wait 6 seconds for srs light to go off, remove plug within 4 seconds, wait for light to come back on, bridge the connector within 4 seconds, wait for the light to go off, remove connector within 4 seconds, then it should flash. then turn ignition off for 10 seconds then turn on and it should turn on for 6 seconds then go out.

much more complicated than it should be lol

srs_reset.jpg

found this for a visual for anybody that needs to do this in the future.
if you need to unplug or plug in any srs components, unplug the negative then positive battery connections first then wait for at least 3 minutes. i have left mine for 15 minutes now. afraid of the airbags a little bit lol.

i will post pics and do a diy on it, to help people who may need help with this issue in the future.

Re: SRS light / install airbag

The SRS light on in my car for the longest time when I first got, turned out it was just a blown fuse in the kick panel. Easy fix
