Re: 98 Prelude

Look for rust in the lip of the rear wheel wells

ask about the timing belt/water pump maintenance

take a close look at the front end for any signs of previous damage (body lines not aligning up right)

It's red, very common to fade - so if a certain part of the car looks better than the rest due to paint work, it'll be noticeable.

check the trunk for water in the spare tire area - easy fix, but if he doesn't know that then you can talk him down in price

ask when the clutch was replaced and all fluids flushed

find out if he has the red key, 2 master keys and a valet key. Primarily find out if he has a red key... NEVER use it on the car, it is required to have new keys made and only serves that purpose

Re: 98 Prelude

I would agree on asking about the
maintenance timing belt, water pump,
and also around that many miles he egr
port are known to get clogged.

careful he just isn't reseting the ecu to hide
a cel):

Re: 98 Prelude

Glad to see its a manual. Make sure the clutch grabs good if not try to lower the price down. Also make sure it shifts through 1-5 gear and reverse smoothly and no grinds or pop outs. Also ask for receipt of previous work. Also check if the timing belt has been done. The rest is oil leaks and etc

Re: 98 Prelude

$4500 doesn't seem too bad but it never hurts to haggle a bit! Good luck

Re: 98 Prelude

There's a Buying Guide on here that you should check out: Buying a Fifth Gen. From the pictures, it looks like a pretty solid car.

Re: 98 Prelude

Ok so i saw the car today and its really the cleanest 98 car i have ever seen! The interior looks like it just left the showroom! But more importantly no leaks, rust, car runs smooth it shifts great clutch seems to grab fine everything seems good! Two things i checked under the spare tire and i was a little water in there and SRS light is on!

I'd say jump on it! Looks pretty solid. Did you check the Vehicle History report? aka the Carfax?

Re: 98 Prelude

Yessir! Honestly, it looks great….I'm betting it will turn out clean as whistle. BUT, in case it doesn't, you won't want to find out that it's been in some major wreck down the road after making the purchase. Not that it looks like it, just saying.

Re: 98 Prelude

Water in trunk is probably tail light gaskets. Common problem and easy fix.
