help! manual tranny shifting problem.

So I was driving my friends home, not driving particularly hard on my car, but shifting at about 6500 rpm. Went to shift from 3rd to 4th and then the transmission just stopped working. Like I can't even shift into a gear at all.

I can move my shift lever to the top left and then horizontally across where 3rd and 5th should be. Nothing. Can't even limp home. Hoping something just came loose on the lever inside the car. Dad is bringing me tools.

If anybody has had this problem or can help me it is much appreciated. It has a clutch with <10k miles so I don't think that could be it.

I shifted from 3rd to 4th, then when I let off the clutch and tried to continue it went straight to redline. Clutch fluid looks good, everything was connected in my car, that's all I had a chance to check. There are no gears with the car on or off, I can move the lever in every direction without feeling a gear. It can move from where fully engaged 1st is straight to where fully engaged 3rd or 5th or wherever.

Re: help! manual tranny shifting problem.

no i used that as an example. i can move the shifter in any direction. in the rectangle area of where the gears should be, i can move the lever freely. i can move it up and down and side to side anywhere in the shifting area. there are no gears that i can feel at all. its hard to explain. its like a cable snapped and there is no link from the lever to the transmission, it can move from all the way left to all the way right from the top to the bottom. nothing.

edit: i was also typing that last post on my phone because my dad gave me a ride home.

Re: help! manual tranny shifting problem.

ok, so i think it is either that the shifter linkage cable broke when i pulled down the shift lever, or the bushings on the linkage going into the transmission were just old and failed. the linkage looked ok inside the car (took off center console to check). from what i have seen on preludeonline, i could get either poly bushings or solid bushings for about $70.

im not sure if this is something i could do myself, or there is a shop about 2 miles from where my car is parked that could probably do it. i have my old truck that i will have to drive until i get the lude fixed.

take off the center console and check if the shifter/base/cables broke

didn't see anything broken on this end, which makes me wonder if maybe the linkage bushings on the transmission end broke and came off, or if maybe the cable just failed somewhere. but its 4am in the morning now, leaving as soon as i can to check out my suspicions. i don't want to pay a shop to take off a pin and push in a rubber bushing.

Re: help! manual tranny shifting problem.

check the cable linkage at the other end now, on top of the tranny, under the air box etc...... its possible the cotter pin broke and the cable came off ....or it snapped or the holder came loose

you should be able to see it with a flashlight

Re: help! manual tranny shifting problem.

Had the same problem when I got my prelude. Couldn't shift into gear when the car is on, turned out to be the Clutch Master Cylinder. Check that and the Slave Cylinder as well.

Re: help! manual tranny shifting problem.

it was the linkage going onto the... shift fork? (not really sure what its called)

i'm not sure if it supposed to have a cotter pin or not. i see an indent where it looks like one should be, but the tow truck driver, who owns one of the local car repair shops said it looks like it is supposed to have some sort of clip? idk. im just gonna drill a hole and use a cotter pin with some washers to hold it tight.

edit: it had just fallen off. was too dark at 1:30am when it happened for me to see it, but it was easy to fix today, plus the insurance covered the tow truck, i gave the guy a $10 tip :thumbsup

Re: help! manual tranny shifting problem.

Check the linkage cables. Bc for me one night driving home from work as I shifted out of 2nd to 3rd something popped and and my shifter couldnt go into any gear. I knew I had to be stuck in a gear mainly 3rd. Had to burn the clutch a little to get home. Turns out the cotter pin holding the shifter where the cables meet was worn and broke. Just had to reposition the cables and buy new pins and I was good to go. So check your shift linkage area!

If you read the thread, that was the problem.

Broke like 4 drill bits trying to drill the rusted cotter pin out. Getting a carbide tipped masonry bit today, hopefully works better
