Icon1 FAQ: What is this?

I haven't seen a thread like this so thought I'd make one since I sometimes see people asking and making threads. There's a lot of things on our cars that aren't being used or look like there's something missing. Honda left out some stuff that other Preludes in other countries had. There's also things in our cars that we wonder why is it there? or what does it do? Hopefully this thread can clear up some things and provide info to everyone to make us a tad smarter at the end of the day
I've gathered a small amount of things that I've seen common and things I've came across and wondered what it was myself. I know there's a lot more things that can be added to this and if you guys know of anything please let me know and I will add it to here
The HELMS manual has helped me a ton with all of this and I reccomend downloading yourself a copy as it is very helpful and interesting to read.

#1: Security Alarm System (Optional)
This one is somewhat hidden it's behind the washer resviour and in front of the ABS system. It's taped to a bigger wire loom. Honda had a optional security alarm system that you could of added to your Prelude when you bought it from the dealer. Im almost sure this is what they used to connect the alarm horn into the engine bay.

Helms manual diagram

#2: Trailer lighting connector
This one is behind your drivers tailight taped to the tailight wires. I don't have much info on this one but Im assuming this is used to attach a trailer to your Prelude which I've never seen done or this connector being used. It is sometimes confused as a rear foglight connector.

Helms manual diagram

#3: Fog Light connector
This one is behind your drivers side turn signal/fog light cover, it's taped to your turn signal wire. Honda had optional fog lights that go in place of those black covers when you first bought your Prelude at the dealer. People also use these to connect JDM fogs an v2 rep fogs.

Helms manual diagram

#4: Keyless entry unit
The newer Preludes I believe 99+ came with keyless entry from the dealer. The unit is behind the drivers side rear panel. It's a silver box mounted to the ground. I couldn't find a picture of it and never took one when I took off my panel. Rep to anyone who can get me one, thanks.

#5: Random valve cover holes
These are those random "holes" on our valve covers. There were for the right hand drive Preludes. There's clips that snap into these holes to run the throttle cable over to the right side of the car. Our cars don't have it cause their left hand drive of course.

#6: Ashtray
If you remove your ashtray you will see that the hole goes deeper then what the ashtray needs. Some Preludes came with a "deep ashtray" More room to fill up with ash and cig buds or in my case more loose coins

Also another thing is that little clear rectangle is to let light through from a bulb that sits inside your center console. Turns on with your parking lights.

#7: Rear ashtray
On the rear drivers side panel you have a cup holer and this random rectangle hole. I always thought something was missing there and finally found out that in some Preludes they came with a rear ashtray. You can see the grooves where it slides in. Why they left that out in our preludes? I have no idea....

#8: AFBS Unit
This is in your trunk on the passenger side. It's a medium sized brownish box that has some connections. It's your Acoustic feed back system unit. AFBS is something Honda made to basically make the music quality in our speakers more clear and better. It's usaully removed when the rear speakers or/and headunit are replaced with a aftermarket one.

#9: "Mini Amp"
This one isn't too far from the AFBS unit. It's in the center of your trunk and is a small black box with connections. If you know anything about sound systems you should already know what it is by reading the name.... if not like me, it's what helps with the sound of the speakers.

#10: Random ground wires
This is those 3 groun wires on the drivers side that goes from the shock tower, to the valve cover, then to the PS pump. Foun there kinda random since the way they were places in the engine. The diagram pretty much sums up what they are.. Sometimes people tuck them when they remove the PS or like me just want a cleaner look.

That's all I have for now. Will keep updating as I find more or get more from you guys. Thank you and hope this help's and prevents any threads from being made by reading this.

UPDATE: 12/3/12

#11 Rear EDM fog template
If you ever took off your rear bumper you might of seen this template. In Europe it is a law to have a rear fog light, so all Preludes made for Europe had them pre-installed into their cars. On our USDM cars Honda kept the template there....why? Well less work and less money to have 2 assembly lines making the same thing. It's pretty hard to see in the pic as I never took a picture of it when I took off my bumper and this is all I can find. It's also the same for 4th gens. Also the bumper is from a 4th gen but it's in the exact place/size for 5th gen.

#12: Rear OEM spoiler mounts
As many of you know, some Preludes came with spoilers and some didn't. The Type SH all came with spoilers but on the base model it was a option. You guys without a spoiler if you look under your trunk along the edge you may see some metal nipples sticking out. Those nipples are where the spoiler screws go into to mount the spoiler. Making it a lot easier to install a OEM spoiler yourself if you never got pre-installed at the dealer. This is the best picture I could find, still looking for a real photo showing them.

#13: Fog light interior connections
Explained like above, fog light were optional. If you look under your dash you will find a Orange wire with a female connector this is one of the wires you need to connect to your fogs. Take off your fuse box cover... You will see 4 connections lined up. You use 2 of these to connect your fog lights up. Picture explains it better

wasn't the keyless entry an option on the 97-98s?

I don't think 5th Gen cupholders can fit into a 4th Gen. I know one of the 4th gene came with that single cupholder I think of was the one in Japan?

Thanks guys!!! Glad its helping you guys out. And yes I think it was an optional feature for 97-98 but was on all 99-01 preludes.

For the price you could always just get a aftermarket alarm better choice imo.

Re: FAQ: What is this?

Hate to say it, but having #10 is rather pointless.... all 5th gens had those ground wires.

Is this what you're looking for in #4? 2001 base model.

edit*

If I may also add;

maintenance hood prop location

i also recall reading that there is a jumper harness between the 3rd brake light and right quarter that is used for changing to a spoiler light - never checked though

dead end plug beneath the intake manifold is for the injectors - there is no other end - is literally called a "dead end plug"

harness on the abs unit is just a 6" or so extension, can plug directly in without the extension

bolts under the header on 97-98 5th gens is for another heat shield (some have it some don't from what i've seen)

front bumper - dead center of the opening - mounting tab for an oem front license plate bracket http://i751.photobucket.com/albums/x...e/DSCN0661.jpg

empty 10mm threaded hole on the drivers side shock tower - in front of the clutch master cylinder is for a spark plug resistor box (obd1)

tabs beneath front grill are meant to go in the thin lip on the top of the front bumper - so the grill won't "flop" even if it's missing the center push pin you can see the thin lip in this photo, in front of the push pins - it has rub marks on top from previous owner not knowing the grill goes under this and installed it over instead http://i751.photobucket.com/albums/x...e/DSCN3508.jpg

I know of a few others, i'll post as i remember exactly though.

Thanks guys. And thank you Wing8806! I will update all of those into the orginal post in a few and give you credit also thanks for the pic! Repped. And I know all 5th gens had those ground wires but not everyone knows what they are so I added it into here.
