Should I Buy

Hey guys, I know these are pretty common, but I'm in the market for a 5th gen, hopefully decently low miles and stumbled on this ad and wanted some opinion. I'll post the ad first and then our emails back and forth, any opinions would be super appreciated.

Rare Electron Blue 2001 Honda Prelude SH(manual) - $6499-
103k miles with custom black leather interior with carbon fiber dash. 5 speed manual with MOMO short shifter. Aero Body Kit, coilovers, strutbars, AEM cold air intake. Apex N1 cat-back exhaust(not attached). Beautiful car, serious inquiries only

Emails between us:

Me:I know it may be a bunch of questions, but I'm a huge fan of Preludes and want to make sure I buy the right one for myself….here they are:

Are you the only owner?
What kind of maintenance have you done to the car?
What type of oil do you use and how often do you check it?
Does the car have a clean title/carfax?
What was the main use of the car (Daily driver, fun on weekend, etc.)?
Are the coilovers on stock or aftermarket struts?
Does the ATTS system work?
Why are you selling the car?

Him:1. I am the 2nd owner.
2. Regular maintenance, about every 3000 miles.
3. Castrol 100% synthetic oil, again about every 3k miles.
4. Yes the title and carfax are clean.
5. Previous owner used it as a weekend car. I used it for 2 years as a daily driver than as a weekend car.
6. Aftermarket coilovers and strut bars.
7. Yes ATTS system is still functional.
8. I love this car but I got a teaching contract overseas and its a waste sitting in my garage.

Re: Should I Buy

clean, and looks nice. but it comes down to what the car will be worth to you. most of the users on here love their preludes because they have put so much work and love into it. it is very nice looking, but don't be afraid to put your own love into it and make it your own.

I'm absolutely going to...first thing I've been planning for a month now on paper is putting an iPad mini in dash and redoing the whole sound system..... (P.S. when it comes time, would you guys like to see a write-up of it?)

mosdef!!

investment? you are buying a real nice car at a decent price. but... sports cars are money pits... i mean it aint like an old hemi where you put in $5 grand and get back $20.. but a worthwhile project? yep.. electron blue s.h. with low miles is a treasure that you can re sell for what you paid.. or a little more if the right person wants it bad enough

Re: Should I Buy

go for it, seems legit enough just make sure you test drive it, and look to make sure all the warning lights come on when you turn the key to on position. then make sure the car doesnt get any warning lights after a test drive at normal operating temp. seems like it is in good condition and well taken care of, so if you have the money then do it.

I just sent that in a follow up email....if it hasn't been done, I'm gonna ask him to lower the price. (Which I may try to negotiate anyway)

Re: Should I Buy

Check the quarters for rust. Yeah, deff find out about the timing belt.

If everything checks out, that's a damn good price as is.

114k - original owner - $8500 is what I paid for mine I think.... and that was 3 years ago.

Re: Should I Buy

Just noticed something, the drivers side headlight is dipped in a bit.

Either the tabs are broken on the side and top, or it was hit in that corner. Check on that, could possibly get him down in price due to needing new headlights.

My favorite blue in the world. Very clean and the rims go great with it. If it has been taken care of and well maintained with receipts DO IT. Try talking him down anyway just to save some cash and you can always use that for tune up etc.

Re: Should I Buy

has he done the timing bel job?
ever changed ignition/brake parts?
does it still have the original clutch?

...but anyway, are you looking for to keep your car stock or are you going to build/upgrade it more? you cannot really build SH that much, because of atts (tuning is kinda difficult)
IMO base is better because its easier to build/upgrade to suit your personal needs

Re: Should I Buy

Thanks for all of the info guys....I'm still waiting to hear back from him, which is kind of a worrisome sign, but we'll see how it goes. I plan on keeping it mostly stock since I'm moving to Florida for flight school (re:I'm not gonna have any money). The only mods I'm gonna do are sound system since I'm probably going to spend a lot of time driving it every day. I've got my brother who is a gear head and my mom gonna go down and pick it up when/if the time comes and knowing her she will probably end up having it re-inspected etc.

Now let's just wait until (if) he emails.

Drive it first. It does look like a good buy, but if you've got any friends with a Carfax subscription, have them check the VIN. There's also a Buying a Fifth Gen guide on here that you could check to see some other things to check for.

Re: Should I Buy

Check out the buying guide, drive the car, put it through its paces and look it over real well. Determine if timing belt has been changed, if not that's gonna be an additional cost you'll need to do in the very near future.
If car is square, it looks like a good deal but could be a priced a bit high if maintenance has not been kept up. Beware of oil leaks!

Good Luck!

....and get a headlight restoration kit....
