Slim fans?

I have a 50 dollar gift card to use by the end of this month and thought I'd spend it on my Prelude. Came across these and I wouldn't mind the extra space and the much cleaner look of some slim fans. But I don't want to buy something thats crappy but then their just fans so I want to see if anyone has bought them and what your thoughts are on them. I can't remember but I think ours are 12 inches. I have a stock

Is it a direct bolt up and no modding? other then cutting the connectors off the stocks and putting them onto these Thank you.

Re: Slim fans?

The most important criteria about rad fans is that you need them to be shrouded. If you don't have a fan shroud, the air is simply gonna pass around the fans, instead of thru them.

*edit* and oh yea, that they move the same, or greater, CFM's of air than stock.

Re: Slim fans?

Thats where I got confused when researching. So if I just take off my stock fans and put these on the air wouldn't go through them and not cool down my car properly? Where would I buy a shroud? Or would I be better off buying the ones the come witht the shroud already?

Re: Slim fans?

Easiest solution is buying fans already with a shroud.

Orrrr you could mess around with dimensioning the rad width x height, than the mounting point dim's, than the diameters of the fans, than the mounting points for the fans....

Re: Slim fans?

I have those exact ones (just BLUE) They work great for me and pull or push a lot of air. They will mount directly up to your rad with the plastic zip tie mounts they include. You put them through any of the fins on your rad and put the backing on just make sure you use the cushions they give you so you don't wear out the radiator and you're good to go. Then splice the wires in to the stock wires to either push or pull.

Super easy

Re: Slim fans?

You are screwing yourself out of ALOT of cooling potential with your fans unshrouded like you have them. I have mishimoto slims. I took the stock fan and gutted the inside and mounted the slim fan to the shroud. One day I'll get enough ambition to make a custom shroud.

Much better choice. That is the route to take man. Get an aluminum radiator while you're at it and some nice hoses.

Sorry if I thread jackin'? I have the aluminum radiator in my lude with stock fans but I couldn't find anything for 92-96 Prelude. The OP posted the link with aluminum shroud... will it work with my radiator?

No Alex that shroud is for 5th gen radiator. I haven't found any made for our 4th gen radiators yet.

I don't use a shroud, and have them mounted as Tracer posted.

Everything operates as it should, a shroud is not required.

My engine temps are normal, fans kicking on when they should, and I have a healthy motor that takes one hell of a beating. I say they work like stock or close to it.

Since there has been no real testing involved, I will not say they are or are not working to "full" potential. And would love to challenge anyone that would like to say one or the other - to prove it.

I will say though;

The fans kick much harder than stock and stay on for half the time - which would lead one to assume it's cooling down faster. The air travels through the entire radiator and into the bay - no matter what.

When the car is in motion, yes, all the air is gonna pass thru the entire radiator, operating like normal.

But when you come to a stop light after a hard run, the only air that's gonna be passing thru the rad is the air behind the fans (when the fans are on). All the air stuck between the fins that's not behind the fans (not shrouded) is just remaining stagnant and just hovering in the rad, cuz the shroud pulls the air from the entire rad thru the fans.

Wing might not have a problem b/c it might not be a hot enough climate.
Or if its going to be a potential turbo car which run even hotter than N/A, I wouldn't risk it.

But I do agree with Wing, I don't think I've seen quantitative data or any tests that prove/disprove shrouded vs unshrouded fans, but I sure would love to see it.

Re: Slim fans?

So you're saying if the fans are un-shrouded, they aren't pushing all the extra hot air through the rad because it's not covering the entire rad in order to push the air out of the areas the fans aren't covering.

Makes sense now, good point

I might have to change mine to shrouded now, since my car did get hot only on a couple of those super hot days this summer, and see if that helps

Well it gets 100+ sometimes here in the summer :( I don't think I wanna risk it but then if Wing is doing just fine with his without a shroud it's tempting to try them out and if not just put the stocks back on and wait for a shroud...

Re: Slim fans?

Just for the record - a non shrouded fan is pulling air through the radiator even while at a stop.

Our cars use pulling fans, not pushing fans. So at a stop it is pulling air through the rad and into the bay, which is exactly what they do even with a shroud. It's going to be warm air be it shrouded or not - not much you can do about it since the car is not in motion.

I've driven my car for 5 straight hours - non stop - at 65mph+ then followed by an hour of in-town stop and go, in summer heat (95*+)

As well as 4 hours in stop and go traffic in the middle of summer.

Definitely put this car through some rough times and my temps have remained normal the entire time.

These are just based on my personal experiences.

But as you stated - give them a try, if it doesn't work out due to your higher temps in texas then try a shroud.

Yes, but ONLY from the areas that the fans are covering over the radiator. How about all the other area of the radiator that the fans AREN'T covering?!
That air isn't moving anywhere when your at a stop, since the fans are only pulling the air from where they're covering.

12" high cfm fans vs 12 " stock fans with less cfm, still doing the job

Re: Slim fans?

Thanks guys. Im going to order them soon. There's nothing to loose since Im basically getting them for free with this giftcard I won lol. But the 12" fans are the size I should get correct? Black fans or blue fans? Or is the blue ricey?
