Help, Urgent

Hey guys I'm posting on behalf of my dad who took my 5th gen manual transmission to his parents house for Thanksgiving break. It's a 12 hour drive to where he's going, and he called me today to let me know it's been cutting out at random times. The engine turns off, but everything electrical remains on. Sometimes it will start back up right away, but recently he's been having to wait a minute or so before it will start (the engine has cut out multiple times). Being as though it's Sunday night, no place is open that would be able to take a look at it. I was just wondering what you guys think the problem could be. I only drive it to school and around town, and this has happened to me only once, but it started right back up so I didn't think anything of it. However, sometimes I will try to start it (right after getting in the car) and everything electrical will turn on, but the engine will not fire at all. At that point, I have to take the key ALL the way out, and try again. Then it will start up right away. Let me know if there's a possible quick fix that he could do by himself to get to his parent's place (he's three hours away right now).

Thanks for the help

Re: Help, Urgent

Is this an auto or a 5spd?

Sounds like your main relay or ignition switch - both easy fixes, but not on the fly due to needing them from Honda.

That's just my guess though....

Is there a check engine light on?

Re: Help, Urgent

Have you had the ignition recall done yet? Contact Honda and give them your VIN to see if it has been done to your car or not.

Re: Help, Urgent

I used to have that problem with my car an still do but like 1 out of a1000 times I try to start it I would go to start my car and it would just sit there and turn over but wouldn't start and all electrical was on and would have to take the key all the way out wait a couple seconds and try again but it would never kill my car while driving the ignition switch could be the cause, if the key smells burnt or the ignition itself thats your problem other wise I fixed my problem by adding distilled water to my battery because it was low, and It was a brand new interstate megatron and fixed the problem. My other failed attempts were wasting money on new sparkplug wires and an alternator tho it was still needed it didn't fix the start up issue

Re: Help, Urgent

Yeah, that's common on our cars due to the recall. I would say take it in and get the recall done, if it happens again.

Re: Help, Urgent

sounds like an iginition switch issue. Have you had it replaced, cause there was a recall several years back. Also, do you keep a lot of junk on your key chain? That also causes wear on teh ignition switch
