Stupid power steering whine

Power steering whines has been covered alot but nothing that really sounds like my issue.

98 SH
I swapped power steering belts today and after installation, i started it up... sounded good. As i turn the steering wheel, i get a long creaking/whining noise in every direction i try and turn to(coming from the pump by the pulley)... as soon as i let off the steering wheel, the noise stops. Its bugging the crap out of me. I tried adjusting it many different ways and the noise is still there.

P.s. At any startup, You don't even hear the power steering pump but as soon as i turn the wheel just a bit, i get some noise coming from the pump... but its not as bad as when i turn the wheel. I'm replacing an o-ring and flushing the crap out of the fluid... Any input or advices? Thanks!

Re: Stupid power steering whine

Sounds like your low on fluid? I know my sisters car got a horrible screeching sound when the steering wheel was turned and her fluid was low.

Re: Stupid power steering whine

Forgot to mention, My Fluid is over filled by a little from the top line. lol. i made sure of it. So thats ruled out... I'm driving without a belt now, the whining is embarrassing... lol. I highly doubt its my power steering pump, because at first start up it has absolutely no noise to it at all until i turn the wheel slightly and more.

Re: Stupid power steering whine

I used to have the exact same problem, was caused by air getting inside the power steering lines/pump from a leak on the left side of the pump (gasket). Changed the pump instead of gasket paid 20$ off a local and solved my issue, look around if your pumps leaking or if any lines are leaking

Re: Stupid power steering whine

Thanks, i just cleaned all the power steering lines/hoses/connections... Ill keep an eye on it to see if there are any leaks... But i haven't noticed any leaks on the pump itself though.

Re: Stupid power steering whine

if there is no leak visible anywhere look up on google how to bleed your pump out of air , i dont exactly remember the entire procedure but im pretty sure you remove the cap to the p/s reservoire and then turn the wheel left until its at the end , then you do the same thing but all the way to the right and back to the left and so on , if the noise stops completely you have sucessfully freed all the air out . If it was the pump bearing that would be bad you would get a whine that gets louder when giving shots of gas . ive had both these problems on both my preludes lol

Re: Stupid power steering whine

but im not too sure on how the air got in if all you did was change the belt, did you rotate the pulley backwards ? that would be my only guess

Re: Stupid power steering whine

Thats what im thinking also, I have no idea how air got in, I didn't unplug any hoses... straight belt swap. Turning the pulley by hand while the belts out wouldnt cause anything would it?

I've got the bleeding procedure but it shouldn't be the bearing either, because at idle or as long as the wheel isnt turned, theres no noise.
